ATP roundup: Hamad Medjedovic earns milestone victory in Marseille

Serbian underdog Hamad Medjedovic pulled off a shocking upset against top seed Daniil Medvedev on Saturday, racing to a 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 72 minutes. Prior to the semifinal, Medjedovic, 21, had never beaten a Top 10 player. He fired seven aces and saved 3 of 5 break points to topple Medvedev, ranked No. 8 in the world.

Awaiting Medjedovic in the final is local favorite Ugo Humbert, the No. 2 seed. The Frenchman handled Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 6-4, 6-4 by winning 29 of 35 first-serve points. Humbert is aiming for his fourth career ATP title and first of the season.

IEB+ Argentina Open (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Fifth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo capitalized on strong serving to defeat Spain’s Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-4. The Argentine crowd spurred Cerundolo to eight aces, and he staved off all seven break points he faced.

He’ll square off in the final against Brazilian 18-year-old Joao Fonseca, who bested Serbian qualifier Laslo Djere in a topsy-turvy 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1 affair. Tied 1-1 in the third set, Djere faltered, and Fonseca cruised to his second three-set triumph in as many rounds.


Delray Beach Open (Florida, United States)

Seventh-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia earned his place in the final with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 upset of No. 3 seed Alex Michelsen. Kecmanovic rallied from 4-5 in the opening set before surging to a 3-0 lead in the second, closing out the victory in front of a partisan crowd.

He awaits the winner of the later semifinal between Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi. The championship match will be held Sunday.
