Varvara Gracheva of France saved five of six break points en route to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 3 seed Peyton Stearns on Tuesday. Stearns racked up six aces but offset that with six double faults. She fought off three match points in the final game before Gracheva finally converted the fourth.

Top-seeded Jessica Pegula took the opening set 6-3 and led 3-2 in the second when the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus retired due to injury. No. 2 seed Diana Shnaider needed three sets to outlast fellow Russian Tatiana Prozorova 0-6, 6-2, 7-5. Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage recorded a personal-best 14 aces to rally past the Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Caroline Dolehide, Germany’s Tatjana Maria, Japan’s Ena Shibahara, Belgium’s Greet Minnen, and Spain’s Cristina Bucsa also moved on. Later Monday, Romania’s Sorana Cirstea was set to meet Germany’s Laura Siegemund, and eighth-seeded Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands was scheduled to face Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova.

Australia’s Daria Saville upset No. 6 seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 6-4, 7-6 (6), making good on 6 of 10 break-point opportunities. Saville rallied from an early 3-0 deficit in the second set and trailed 2-0 in the tiebreaker. She staved off a set point at 5-6 before clinching the final three points to knock off the world No. 19.

Croatia’s Petra Martic cruised past Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-3. Poland’s Magda Linette and Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova logged straight-set wins, while Great Britain’s Francesca Jones led 6-4, 3-0 when Egypt’s Mayar Sherif retired.

Two additional matches were slated for Tuesday night: eighth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece vs. Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez, and Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian against Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva.
