Spring Training Recap: Red Sox Prospects Impress, Yankees and Phillies Play to a Tie

Spring training action continued with several exciting matchups, including a big performance from Boston’s top prospects, late-inning drama between the Yankees and Phillies, and a dominant pitching display by the Mets against Houston.


Red Sox 7, Tigers 6

Marcelo Mayer went 3-for-3, hitting a two-run homer and an RBI triple, while Roman Anthony delivered the go-ahead double to lead the Red Sox past the Tigers’ split squad in Lakeland, Fla.

Anthony, Mayer, and Kristian Campbell—all among Boston’s top prospects—played key roles in the victory.

David Hamilton and Trayce Thompson added solo home runs in the sixth, which proved crucial as Detroit rallied from a 6-1 deficit to make it a one-run game.

On the mound, Quinn Priester started for Boston, allowing two hits and two walks in two innings. Josh Winckowski (1-0) earned the win in relief.

For the Tigers, Justice Bigbie had an RBI in the seventh and later added a run-scoring single in the ninth, but Hobie Harris struck out Max Anderson looking to seal the win for Boston.


Tigers 7, Rays 7

A three-homer rally in the ninth helped Tampa Bay come back to tie Detroit in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Tres Barrera, Tanner Murray, and Tristan Peters each hit solo home runs in the ninth, as the Rays overcame a late deficit to force a tie.

Spencer Torkelson opened the scoring for Detroit with a two-run home run, while Tomas Nido went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Tampa Bay finished with 14 hits, with Jake Mangum also collecting two hits.


Yankees 7, Phillies 7

A wild ninth inning saw Philadelphia draw a hit-by-pitch and three straight walks, forcing in the game-tying run to earn a 7-7 draw against the Yankees in Clearwater, Fla.

Johan Rojas and Rafael Lantigua homered for the Phillies, while Zack Wheeler impressed on the mound, striking out four over two scoreless innings.

For New York, Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Cabrera each hit home runs, while prospect Tyler Hardman put the Yankees ahead 7-6 in the eighth with a three-run blast.

Carlos Rodon started for the Yankees, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out four in 2 2/3 innings.

Mets 5, Astros 0

The Mets’ pitching dominated as they blanked Houston in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Clay Holmes, transitioning to a starting role, went three innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Offensively, Ryan Clifford and Brett Baty powered the Mets with two-run home runs in the sixth inning.

For Houston, Christian Walker had two of the team’s four hits, while starter Colton Gordon struck out three over two scoreless innings.


Cardinals 8, Marlins 4

Nolan Arenado continued to showcase his value, hitting a three-run homer and a double to lead St. Louis past Miami in Jupiter, Fla.

The Cardinals took control in the second inning when Willson Contreras broke a 4-4 tie with an RBI single.

Matthew Liberatore (1-0) pitched two perfect innings in relief after starter Andre Pallante struggled, giving up four runs in one-plus inning.

For Miami, Andrew Pintar had a two-run single, while Xavier Edwards and Matt Mervis added RBIs in the second inning.


Pirates 12, Twins 1

The Pirates’ bats exploded, as Nick Solak went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs, and an RBI in a 12-1 rout of Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla.

Jack Suwinski contributed with two RBI hits, while Pittsburgh added three runs in the sixth and five more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Caleb Ferguson (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits in two innings.

Minnesota’s only run came when Matt Wallner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Pablo Lopez (0-1) struggled in his start, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings.

Orioles 11, Blue Jays 8

Baltimore’s offense exploded in the second inning, led by Ramon Urias (two-run homer) and Tyler O’Neill (three-run blast) in a seven-run frame against Toronto in Sarasota, Fla.

Nine different Orioles recorded a hit, including Sam Basallo’s solo home run in the seventh.

For the Blue Jays, Orelvis Martinez and Myles Straw delivered two-run singles, while Charles McAdoo hit a three-run homer in the ninth.

Roansy Contreras (1-0) earned the win in relief, while starter Easton Lucas (0-1) allowed three runs in 1 2/3 innings.


Final Thoughts

Spring training saw a mix of emerging prospects making a statement, dramatic late-game comebacks, and strong pitching performances. The Red Sox showcased their future stars, while the Mets shut down Houston and the Yankees and Phillies played to a wild tie.

With the season fast approaching, teams are continuing to evaluate their rosters while young talent makes a push for Opening Day spots.
