Spring training roundup: Paul Skenes wows in spring debut

Pirates 5, Orioles 2

Reigning NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes fanned four in three innings in his spring debut, allowing one run on four hits and a walk. He left trailing 1-0, but the Pirates rallied with two runs in the fourth and three in the ninth in Sarasota, Fla. Orioles starter Cade Povich stole the early show with six strikeouts in three scoreless innings (one hit, one walk). Pittsburgh’s decisive three-run burst came off Baltimore’s bullpen in the final frame.


Yankees 9, Astros 3

Aaron Judge made his spring debut and drove in two with a single, pacing host New York in Tampa, Fla. DJ LeMahieu debuted as well, but left after injuring his left calf in the second inning – an ailment that may cost him time. George Lombard Jr., just 19 years old, homered in his first at-bat. Houston managed only five hits, while Yankees reliever Michael Feliz recorded four strikeouts over two spotless innings.

Mets 10, Rays 1

Blade Tidwell, one of New York’s top pitching prospects, struck out five in two perfect innings at Port Charlotte, Fla., including an immaculate second inning (three Ks on nine pitches). Dom Hamel followed with two no-hit frames. Tampa Bay went hitless until the sixth. Jose Siri launched a three-run homer in the third to propel the Mets offensively.


Tigers 1, Phillies 0

Six Detroit pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout at home in Lakeland, Fla. Former No. 1 pick Casey Mize tossed three scoreless innings (two strikeouts, one walk). Gleyber Torres (former Yankee, now with Detroit in spring camp) supplied the game’s lone RBI on a third-inning single. Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola countered with two scoreless frames, allowing one hit with two Ks.


Red Sox 8, Twins 4

Ceddanne Rafaela went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Connor Wong homered for Boston in Fort Myers, Fla. Trevor Story produced two hits, and newly acquired Alex Bregman tallied his fifth RBI of the spring for the Red Sox. Ty France had two hits for Minnesota, which was out-hit 14-9.


Cardinals 3, Nationals (ss) 2

Thomas Saggese singled home pinch runner Dakota Harris in the bottom of the ninth to give St. Louis a walk-off win in Jupiter, Fla. Josh Bell’s two-run homer put Washington up 2-0 in the first, but the Cards rallied despite being held to five hits. Nationals starter Michael Soroka tossed three no-hit innings (three Ks, one walk) in a strong return from long-term injuries.


Blue Jays 1, Braves 1 (Tie)

Luke Williams homered in the seventh to pull Atlanta even, and neither club scored again in North Port, Fla. Rainer Nunez’s grounder brought in Toronto’s lone run in the fifth. The Braves’ Dylan Lee allowed two hits and struck out two in two scoreless innings, while Jacob Barnes worked a hitless opening frame for the Jays.


Nationals (ss) 7, Marlins 0

Washington dominated visiting Miami in West Palm Beach, Fla., behind top prospect Dylan Crews’ two RBI singles and Riley Adams’ grand slam in the third. Mackenzie Gore fanned four across three shutout frames (two hits, one walk). Eduardo Salazar added two more spotless innings as the Nationals combined on an 11-strikeout, six-hit shutout.


Cubs (ss) 7, Guardians 4

Colin Rea (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings (one hit, two Ks, two walks), and Seiya Suzuki drove in three runs on a pair of singles as Chicago’s split squad beat Cleveland in Mesa, Ariz. Carlos Perez homered for the Cubs, who scored in each of the first two innings. Juan Brito and Yordys Valdes homered for the Guardians but they came up short.


Reds 7, Padres 3

Cincinnati overcame a 2-1 deficit with a five-run sixth, riding Christian Encarnacion-Strand’s homer and a sacrifice fly, plus a two-run single by Ivan Johnson. Matt McLain and Elly De La Cruz hit back-to-back doubles to start the big inning in Goodyear, Ariz. Ian Gibaut (1-0) threw a scoreless seventh. San Diego’s Austin Davis (0-2) absorbed the loss.


Dodgers 6, Giants 5

Aaron Bracho’s solo homer in the eighth snapped a 5-5 tie and lifted Los Angeles in Phoenix, Ariz. Freddie Freeman and rookie Hyeseong Kim each posted their first spring homers for the Dodgers, who overcame an early 2-0 deficit. Jerar Encarnacion gave San Francisco a 5-4 lead with a seventh-inning blast, but Justin Garza (0-1) allowed Bracho’s go-ahead shot. Chris Campos (1-0) pitched two clean innings in relief for L.A.


Angels 5, Athletics 0

Despite managing just two hits, Los Angeles shut out visiting Oakland in Tempe, Ariz. Five Angels pitchers combined on a four-hitter, started by Kyle Hendricks (2-0), who threw three scoreless frames. Mickey Moniak and Mike Trout drew bases-loaded walks; Yolmer Sanchez stole home; and Jo Adell hit a sac fly. A’s starter Osvaldo Bido (0-1) allowed three runs in the third.


White Sox 18, Mariners 9

Chicago’s 17-hit barrage featured four home runs as they hammered host Seattle in Peoria, Ariz. Luis Robert Jr. (2-for-4, three RBIs) and Adam Hackenburg (2-for-2, two RBIs) went deep, while Andre Lipcius and Brandon Drury also homered. The White Sox erupted for eight runs in the third and six more in the seventh. Mariners starter Emerson Hancock (0-1) worked 1 2/3 innings (three Ks, no runs).


Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 4

Eugenio Suarez blasted a 444-foot, three-run homer in the first and A.J. Vukovich and Ildemaro Vargas added blasts in the second and sixth for Arizona at Scottsdale, Ariz. Zac Gallen (1-0) fanned three in two scoreless frames for the D-backs. Chase Dollander (0-1) served up two early homers in three innings. The Rockies got a two-run shot from Elehuris Montero in the sixth.

Brewers 9, Rangers 4

Rhys Hoskins swatted two home runs, Brice Turang lined a three-run homer, and William Contreras plus Joey Ortiz also went deep in Milwaukee’s power display vs. Texas in Phoenix, Ariz. Christian Yelich returned after missing 1 1/2 seasons with a back injury, going 0-for-3 with an RBI groundout. Kumar Rocker (0-2) was tagged for four runs (three hits, two walks) over one inning for the Rangers. Dustin Harris homered for Texas.


Cubs (ss) 11, Royals 1

Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in four runs – including a two-run double and a solo homer – and Chicago’s other split squad routed host Kansas City in Surprise, Ariz. Michael Busch finished 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Ben Brown (1-0) allowed four hits but just one run in 2 1/3 innings. Royals lefty Cole Ragans (0-1) was rocked for seven runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 frames, yielding two home runs.
