Elias Aguilar’s long-range strike in the 65th minute propelled host Herediano to a home victory over the Galaxy on Wednesday in Cartago, Costa Rica. Aguilar received a pass from Haxzel Quiros near the top of the attacking third and powered a left-footed shot that settled into the bottom left corner. Herediano’s Dany Carvajal and LA’s John McCarthy each posted four saves as neither side could crack the scoreboard until Aguilar’s winner. The second leg of this round-of-16 CONCACAF Champions Cup series is slated for March 12 in Carson, Calif.

Belal Halbouni salvaged a tie for host Vancouver with an 86th-minute header, nodding in Ryan Gauld’s free kick at BC Place in the opener of the two-game set. Monterrey took the lead in the 25th minute when Roberto De La Rosa latched onto an Erick Aguirre through ball and beat Isaac Boehmer, his low shot kissing off the far post. The return leg will be held March 12 in Torreón, Mexico, after a Shakira concert at Monterrey’s usual venue prompted the relocation.
Sounders 0, Cruz Azul 0
Seattle and visiting Cruz Azul battled to a scoreless stalemate in the first leg at Lumen Field. Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei made two stops, while Cruz Azul counterpart Kevin Mier recorded one. Both sides had several half-chances but couldn’t find a breakthrough. The tie shifts to Mexico City on Tuesday for the decisive match.
