Phillies Rout Orioles Behind Luzardo, Sosa’s Big Day

Left-hander Jesus Luzardo struck out six in four innings, and Edmundo Sosa drove in three runs as the Philadelphia Phillies crushed a Baltimore Orioles split squad 12-1 in Sarasota, Fla.

Luzardo (1-1), acquired from Miami in December, allowed just one run on four hits with no walks. The Phillies put up a six-run third inning and a five-run eighth, finishing with 13 hits to Baltimore’s six.

Felix Reyes, Kody Clemens, and Robert Moore each drove in two runs, while Baltimore’s only run came on Ramon Laureano’s first spring home run.

Orioles starter Zach Eflin (0-1) surrendered five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in four innings.


Orioles’ Other Split Squad Handles Tigers in 7-1 Victory

Dylan Carlson recorded three RBIs, while starter Albert Suarez (2-0) pitched five solid innings as Baltimore’s other split squad defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-1 in Lakeland, Fla.

Colton Cowser hit his second spring home run, while Jackson Holliday tripled and scored twice.

Detroit starter Jack Flaherty (0-1) struggled, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks in four innings. Kerry Carpenter singled home Detroit’s only run.

Rays Power Past Nationals With Home Run Barrage

Jake Mangum homered twice and collected four RBIs, leading a Tampa Bay split squad to an 11-5 win over Washington in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Tanner Murray added a home run and three hits, while Josh Lowe also homered and drove in two runs.

Nationals slugger James Wood launched his fourth spring home run, but Washington starter Michael Soroka was hit hard, allowing six runs in four innings.


Yankees Edge Rays in 7-5 Victory

A New York Yankees split squad belted three home runs among 16 hits, outlasting Tampa Bay’s other split squad 7-5 in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Ben Rice (two RBIs), Jasson Dominguez, and Oswaldo Cabrera each homered, while Sean Boyle (1-0) gave up one run in four innings.

Christopher Morel homered for the Rays, while Nathan Wiles (0-1) took the loss after allowing two ninth-inning runs.


Pirates Edge Yankees Split Squad in Ninth-Inning Thriller

Darick Hall smashed a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 win over the Yankees’ other split squad in Tampa, Fla.

Isaac Mattson (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings, while J.C. Flowers secured the save despite allowing a Dominic Smith home run in the ninth.

Yankees’ starter Rob Zastryzny (0-1) surrendered Hall’s decisive blast, while Trent Grisham also homered for New York.

Berrios, Blue Jays Shut Down Braves

Jose Berrios dominated Atlanta, striking out seven in six shutout innings, as the Toronto Blue Jays rolled past the Braves 6-2 in Dunedin, Fla.

Berrios (1-0) allowed just four hits and didn’t issue a walk, while Andres Gimenez homered and Alan Roden drove in two runs.

Braves starter Grant Holmes (0-1) allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings, despite giving up six hits and two walks.


Astros Blank Mets in 5-0 Shutout

Cam Smith launched a two-run homer, and seven Houston Astros pitchers combined for a shutout, as Houston blanked the New York Mets 5-0 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Steven Okert (1-0) struck out four in 1 2/3 innings, while Logan VanWey and James Hicks each tossed two innings to close the game.

Mets starter Tylor Megill (0-2) struggled, giving up four runs on six hits in five innings.


Red Sox Hold Off Twins in 6-5 Win

Boston built a 4-0 lead and held off a late rally to defeat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 in Fort Myers, Fla.

Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run homer, while Connor Wong and Ceddanne Rafaela added solo shots among Boston’s 11 hits.

Garrett Crochet (1-0) struck out seven over four innings, allowing just one run.

Minnesota’s Nate Baez and Austin Martin each drove in two runs, while starter Pablo Lopez (0-4) continued his struggles, allowing four runs over six innings.

Marlins Dominate Cardinals in 11-5 Victory

Host Miami scored four runs in the second inning and five more in the third, cruising past St. Louis 11-5 in Jupiter, Fla.

Xavier Edwards had two hits and four RBIs, while Jonah Bride belted a two-run homer.

Cardinals starter Sonny Gray (0-2) had a rough outing, allowing eight runs on six hits and five walks in just three innings.


Mariners Cruise Past Reds 8-3

Rowdy Tellez homered and collected three hits, while Bryce Miller struck out seven in five strong innings, leading the Seattle Mariners to an 8-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in Goodyear, Ariz.

Miller (1-0) allowed just two hits and a walk, while Austin Shenton added two RBIs for Seattle.

Cincinnati’s Brady Singer allowed one run over 4 1/3 innings, but the Reds’ bullpen gave up seven runs in the final five innings.


Giants Take Down Athletics 7-3 Behind Birdsong’s Dominant Start

Hayden Birdsong dominated with five shutout innings, striking out eight and allowing just two hits as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-3 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Birdsong (2-0) lowered his spring ERA to 0.75, while Willy Adames crushed his third homer of the spring.

Oakland’s Jeffrey Springs (1-2) was knocked around for four runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Royals Crush Rockies in 10-2 Rout

Hunter Renfroe doubled twice and tripled, driving in five runs, as the Kansas City Royals dominated the Colorado Rockies 10-2 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Harold Castro also had two RBIs, while Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (1-1) allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.
