What Happened at the Austrian Grand Prix Last Weekend?

As expected, Max Verstappen dominated last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix. The reigning world champion took another step towards defending his crown, finishing five seconds clear of second-placed Charles Leclerc.

Verstappen has now won each of the previous five races, registering four poles and three fastest laps in the process. When you look at the bigger picture, the Red Bull star has won seven of the nine races this season. 

As a result, Verstappen finds himself 81 points clear of teammate Sergio Perez in the World Drivers’ Championship standings, with Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz completing the top five.

It is also worth noting that Red Bull is the only constructor to have won a Grand Prix in 2023. While Verstappen has claimed seven victories, Perez has won the other two races.

Before we dive into my British Grand Prix 2023 picks, let’s go over the winner odds for Sunday’s race. Unsurprisingly, Verstappen is the bookies’ clear favorite to take the chequered flag at Silverstone.

The 2023 British GP outright odds tell you everything you need to know about Verstappen’s dominance this season. As you can see, the defending champ is priced at -300 to triumph this weekend, while Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton are the only other drivers priced under +1000. 

According to the bookies, Charles Leclerc, Fernando Alonso, George Russell and Carlos Sainz stand a slender chance of tasting victory at Silverstone, with Lando Norris, Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon rounding out the top 10.

Race Winner 

Max Verstappen heads into the British GP on a five-race winning streak, having secured victories in the United States, Monaco, Spain, Canada and Austria. Accordingly, the bookies expect the Red Bull driver to achieve a sixth successive win this weekend. 

Carlos Sainz won the second Grand Prix of the season in Saudia Arabia before winning the fourth race in Azerbaijan. However, no other driver has managed to taste victory in 2023. 

That said, Lewis Hamilton has won three of the last four British GPs – and seven of the previous nine. It is no secret that Hamilton and Mercedes are a fair way behind Red Bull this year, but the seven-time world champion will back himself to win on home soil once again.

Fastest Qualifier – British Grand Prix 2023 Picks

Three different drivers found themselves in pole position across the opening five races, but Verstappen has dominated qualifying in recent weeks. Indeed, the Dutchman has started on pole in each of the previous four GPs. 

For that reason, I’m backing Verstappen to be the fastest qualifier this weekend. Not only is Verstappen the best driver on the track right now, but his Red Bull is on a different level from his rivals’ cars. 

Best Bet: Max Verstappen (-240) 

Top 3 Finish 

As I already mentioned, Hamilton knows what it takes to triumph at Silverstone. Having won a record eight British GPs over the years, the experienced driver will be confident of achieving another podium on home soil.

With that in mind, I can see Hamilton finishing in the top three on Sunday. After finishing second in the Australian Grand Prix, the Englishman finished second in Spain before claiming third place in Canada last month, so he is more than capable of grabbing a spot on the podium this weekend. 

Best Bet: Lewis Hamilton (+100) 

British Grand Prix 2023 Picks – Top 6 Finish

The last of my British Grand Prix 2023 picks concerns Carlos Sainz. I’m backing Sainz to achieve a top-six finish at Silverstone, as the Ferrari man has been one of the most consistent drivers on the grid this season. 

Sainz has finished in the top six in five of the seven races this year and heads into the British GP on the back of three consecutive top-six finishes. That makes the Spaniard a smart bet for a top-six finish this weekend. 

Best Bet: Carlos Sainz (-250)
