2023 Wyndham Championship Picks & Preview

I’ve analyzed the betting odds, stats and trends to produce my Wyndham Championship picks. This is the final tournament of the 2022-23 regular season on the PGA TOUR. The top 70 golfers in the FedExCup standings will qualify for the playoffs, which start next week with the St. Jude Championship.

The Wyndham Championship is the last chance for golfers to earn a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs.

2023 3M Open Results

Lee Hodges shocked the field and won in dominating fashion as a longshot (+8000 odds). He won with a score of -24. Martin Laird, Kevin Streelman and J.T. Poston tied for second place with a score of -17.

I wasn’t near the mark with my three outright winner golf picks last week. Cameron Young (-2) and Lucas Glover (-3) both missed the cut, while Vincent Norrman finished T50 (-7). 2023 Wyndham Championship Preview

When: Thursday, August 3rd – Sunday, August 6th 2023

Where: Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina

TV: CBS / Golf Channel / ESPN+ / Peacock

Field: 156 Golfers (Cut: top 65 and ties)

Purse: $7,600,000 (Winner gets $1,368,000)

Sedgefield has hosted the Wyndham Championship every year since 2008. During that time, the event has ended with a playoff on just three occasions (2009, 2013 and 2021).

The previous seven Wyndham Championship winners are Tom Kim (-20), Kevin Kisner (-15), Jim Herman (-21), J.T. Poston (-22), Brandt Snedeker (-21), Henrik Stenson (-22) and Si Woo Kim (-21). The winning score has been -20 or better in six of the last seven years and that trend will likely continue this year.

Eight of the last ten Wyndham Championship winners have had odds of +4000 or better.

Sedgefield Country Club Course Information

Par: 70 / Yards: 7,131

Greens: Champion Bermudagrass / Fairways: Bermudagrass / Rough: Bermudagrass (2.5”)

Par 3s: 4 / Par 4s: 12 / Par 5s: 2

Sedgefield is a short par 70 course that favors accuracy over distance. It’s one of the easiest courses on the PGA TOUR based on historical scoring. The tree-lined fairways are tight, but manageable. Winning on this course requires a hot putter to deal with the undulating green complexes.

In the last five years, the cut line has been under par (-1, -3, -3, -4 and -3). Golfers need to start fast out of the gate on Thursday and stay consistent to remain in contention. Some of the golf stats to analyze this week are SG: Approach the Green, SG: Tee to Green, SG: Putting, GIR % and driving accuracy.

Expert Wyndham Championship Picks for 2023

I have analyzed the betting markets to find the best Wyndham Championship picks.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) is favored to win the golf tournament. Matsuyama only has two top 10 finishes this season, with the last being a 5th place finish at the Players Championship in March. He finished T30 at the 3M Open. He has missed the cut in four of seven appearances at the Wyndham Championship.

Next up in the outright winner golf betting market are Si Woo Kim (+2000) and Russell Henley (+2000).

After a T39 at the U.S. Open, Kim has missed the cut in his last two starts at the Travelers Championship and the Open. Henley missed the cut at the Open and hasn’t had a T10 finish since the Masters.

The top three favorites will be popular Wyndham Championship picks, but they’re all struggling. I’m going to be targeting mostly longshots with the hopes of hitting a big payday at Sedgefield.

Top Contenders to Win the 2023 Wyndham Championship

Some of the top contenders this week are Sungjae Im (+2200), Denny McCarthy (+2200), Sam Burns (+2800) and J.T. Poston (+3000). McCarthy is back in the field after missing the cut at the Open with a brutal score of +12. Prior to the missed cut, he had finishes of P2, T20, T7 and T6.

Poston has been on fire lately and he just missed winning his first tournament this season last week, as he finished T2 at the 3M Open. He won here in 2019, but has gone MC, MC and T21 since.

Adam Scott (+3500) is 81st in the FedExCup standings and needs a good performance. Scott ranks 16th in SG: Off the Tee, 32nd in SG: Putting and 8th in par 4 scoring average. However, he ranks 139th in GIR % and 171st in driving accuracy, which likely won’t get it done at Sedgefield.

I recommend fading Justin Thomas (+3500) who just missed the cut in a weak 3M Open field.

Aaron Rai (+4000) looks interesting this week. He has shot 69 or below in 16 of his last 18 rounds, which has resulted in two top 10 finishes. Rai ranks 44th in SG: Approach the Tee, 5th in driving accuracy, 14th in GIR % and 8th in par 4 scoring average. He could contend if he can get hot with the putter.

Longshots to Win the 2023 Wyndham Championship

With the favorites struggling to find form, longshots will be popular Wyndham Championship picks. Based on historical results, you really can’t count anyone out. Five of the last nine winners have had winner odds of +10000 or higher, including Herman (+60000) in 2021 and Davis Love III (+50000) in 2015.

Alex Noren (+6000) needs a top 3 finish to have a chance at making the playoffs. Noren has been in good form with finishes of T9, MC, T23 and T13 in his last four events. Noren ranks 25th in SG: Putting, 86th in SG: Approach to Green and 68th in scrambling. He hasn’t played this event since a T60 finish in 2019.

Adam Schenk (+7000) missed the cut at the Open, but was T4 at the John Deere Classic and 7th place at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Schenk ranks 33rd in SG: Putting, 61st in SG: Approach to Green and 88th in GIR %. He’ll go overlooked due to course form (MC, MC, T51, MC and MC last five years).

Could Webb Simpson (+9000) end the season on a high note? Simpson has one top 10 finish this season (T7 at Valspar Championship), but he has struggled. Simpson has the course form to contend, though, as he has finished inside the top 10 in nine of the last 13 Wyndham Championship golf tournaments.

2023 Wyndham Championship Picks – Outright Winner

I have three outright winner Wyndham Championship picks for this week. We’ve seen longshots that are streaky scorers excel at Sedgefield. With the field this week, that trend has a good shot at continuing.

2023 Wyndham Championship Picks – Top 40 Finish

I’m betting on Noren to finish in the top 40 at the Wyndham Championship. He has finished inside of the top 25 in three of his last four events and he needs a big performance to make the playoffs.

We’re getting close to even money on this golf bet, which seems generous.

2023 Wyndham Championship Picks – To Make the Cut

Let’s see if we can hunt down a big parlay payout this week. I’ll be betting on a parlay where Rai, Noren, Schenk and Simpson need to make the cut, but the payout odds are huge (+594).

I also recommend betting on Rai and Noren to make the cut on a parlay (+128 odds). As long as Rai and Noren make the cut at the Wyndham Championship, we’ll make a profit on these two parlay bets.
