What We Learned From the 2023 US Open
In this section of our 2023 US Open recap, you cover all the biggest stories from the tournament. The 143rd edition of the US Open served up tons of memorable moments, with records tumbling in numerous events.
In addition to winning a record-extending 24th men’s singles major title, Djokovic equalled Margaret Court’s all-time record of major singles titles by either sex. At 36 years and 111 days, Djokovic also became the oldest US Open men’s singles champion in the Open Era.
The men’s singles event also waved goodbye to former world No. 8 John Isner, who played his final professional match in New York. Isner’s farewell tournament ended in disappointment, though, as he suffered a second-round defeat to Michael Mmoh.
As for the women’s singles event, Gauff became the first American teenager to win the title since Serena Williams in 1999. Interestingly, this was also the first major since the 2019 US Open to feature eight seeded quarterfinalists.
No 2023 US Open recap would be complete without a special mention for Diede de Groot. Remarkably, the 26-year-old Dutchwoman has now won each of the previous 10 wheelchair women’s singles majors, cementing her status among the greatest tennis players on the planet.
