NCAA Football Week 5 Report – Game of the Week

  • Game of the Week: #13 LSU (49) vs. #20 Ole Miss (55)

There were multiple contenders for “Game of the Week”, but I’m going with the high-scoring game that went down to the wire. Both teams traded scores all game. There were 14 TDs scored in this game.

Ole Miss were down 49-47 late, but scored a TD with 0:39 left to win the game.

Ole Miss finished the game with 706 yards on offense, while LSU had 637 yards on offense. Both teams averaged 10.0+ yards per pass and the time of possession was basically split down the middle.

LSU were never going to contend for a spot in the College Football Playoffs with a defense this bad.

Here are more of the biggest results that we wanted to include in our NCAA football Week 5 report:

  • #11 Notre Dame (21) vs. #17 Duke (14): Down 14-13 late, Notre Dame scored a touchdown with 0:31 left to win the game. Riley Leonard struggled through the air and couldn’t get the big win.
  • #8 USC (48) vs. Colorado (41): Up 48-21 in the third quarter, USC allowed three unanswered TDs to end the game, but the Trojans remained undefeated. Colorado covered ATS.
  • #1 Georgia (27) vs. Auburn (20): With the game tied late, TE Brock Bowers scored a 40-yard TD to give the Bulldogs the win. Georgia are still #1 in the country, but there are problems.
  • #7 Washington (31) vs. Arizona (24): The Huskies escaped with a win, but they failed to cover ATS. The biggest surprise was that Michael Penix Jr. was held to zero touchdowns.
  • #24 Kansas (14) vs. #3 Texas (40): Are the Longhorns for real? Some analysts expected a close game, but Texas ran away with this Big 12 matchup. Quinn Ewers has wheels on him.
  • West Virginia (24) vs. TCU (21): TCU were favored by two TDs, but West Virginia pulled off the huge upset. The Mountaineers are now 4-1 (2-0 Big 12). TCU failed to score in the second half.
  • #12 Alabama (40) vs. Mississippi State (17): Alabama exploded for 31 points in the first half to seal the deal against the Bulldogs. Alabama are starting to figure things out.
  • #10 Utah (7) vs. #19 Oregon State (21): On Friday, the Beavers defeated the Utes. Utah were still without QB Cameron Rising. The Utes can’t rely on their defense to win every game.
  • #22 Florida (14) vs. Kentucky (33): The Wildcats dominated the Gators at home. Kentucky were up big early and didn’t look back. Kentucky are undefeated and finally ranked in the AP top 25.

NCAA Football Week 5 Report – Betting Trends

Here are some of the betting trends we wanted to include in our NCAA football Week 5 report:

  • Top 25 vs. Unranked: After going 13-0 (8-4-1 ATS) in Week 4, top 25 teams went 11-1 (7-5 ATS) against unranked opponents in Week 5. That’s a 15-9-1 ATS mark in the last two weeks.
  • Bad Week for ACC: The ACC went 0-2 (0-2 ATS) in non-conference games. Georgia Tech and Duke both lost SU. Georgia Tech were -21 favorites, but lost to Bowling Green (38-27).
  • Undefeated Power Five Teams: Sixteen power five conference teams are undefeated. Those are Louisville, Florida State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Penn State, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Oregon, Washington, Washington State, Georgia, Kentucky and Missouri.
  • NCAAF ATS Trends: There are now only six teams that haven’t lost against the spread. Those teams are Oregon, Penn State, Oklahoma, Rutgers, UNLV and Liberty. Four teams still haven’t covered ATS. Those teams are Georgia, Illinois, Vanderbilt and UTSA.
  • NCAAF Over/Under Trends: Four teams have gone over in every game this season. Those are LSU, Vanderbilt, Boston College and North Texas. Three teams have gone under in every game this season. Those teams are Arizona, Utah and Ohio.

What to Watch for Next Week in College Football

We feature the top games for next week in our NCAA football Week 5 report.

  • #12 Oklahoma vs. #3 Texas: Both teams are 5-0 (2-0 Big 12). Dillon Gabriel has 15 passing TDs and 2 INTs, while Quinn Ewers has 10 passing TDs and 1 INT. Texas are favored (-6.5).
  • #23 LSU vs. #21 Missouri: LSU have two losses on the season, but they can play spoiler during the rest of the season. Mizzou are undefeated, but come into this game as an underdog (+6.5).
  • #20 Kentucky vs. #1 Georgia: Can Kentucky shock Georgia in Athens? The Wildcats are being overlooked. The Bulldogs offense has been weak. Georgia are big favorites (-14.5).
  • #10 Notre Dame vs. #25 Louisville: The Fighting Irish have gone down to the wire two games in a row. Louisville are undefeated. Notre Dame are favored (-6.5) on the road.
  • Maryland vs. #4 Ohio State: Maryland are undefeated, but remain unranked. That’d change in a big way if they upset the Buckeyes. OSU are huge favorites (-19.5), but anything is possible.

LSU and Utah were the biggest movers in the AP top 25 poll this week. LSU dropped from #13 to #23 and Utah dropped from #10 to #18. Ole Miss moved up from #20 to #16 after defeating LSU.

USC and Oregon swapped positions in the rankings, which makes sense. The Trojans need to tighten up on defense if they expect to win a National Championship this season with Caleb Williams.

Kansas and Florida are out of the top 25, while Kentucky and Louisville are now ranked.

That wraps up our NCAA football Week 5 report. Our handicappers killed it this week and they’ll be back for Week 6. Sign-up to Sports Hub now so that you don’t miss any college football picks this week.
