NCAAF 2023 Bowl Report: Underdogs Dominate Early

This is our first NCAAF 2023 bowl report. We’ll be recapping the bowl games that were played between December 16th and December 23rd 2023 to uncover trends to target for the rest of the bowl season.

There were some very surprising results to analyze in our NCAAF 2023 bowl report.

One thing to keep in mind when betting on college football bowl games is that a lot of players opt-out or are unable to play because they entered the transfer portal. This can lead to surprising results.

We’ll first examine how our handicappers performed in our NCAAF 2023 bowl report.

A lot of the early bowl games have been close games, which is great to see. I expect more of the same as bowl season progresses. There were some surprising blowouts. Ohio kicked things off by upsetting the Eagles as small underdogs. South Florida crushed Syracuse despite being +5.5 underdogs.

Utah State were small favorites in their bowl game but were dominated by Georgia State.

NCAAF 2023 Bowl Report – Early Betting Trends to Watch

I’ve uncovered some betting trends from the early bowl games for our NCAAF 2023 bowl report. You can use this data to help you with your predictions for the rest of the bowl season.

Here are some early betting trends to watch that we wanted to include in our NCAAF 2023 bowl report:

• Moneyline Trends: Underdogs have been on fire to start bowl season. Underdogs have won 10 of the first 18 bowl games straight-up, which is surprising, to say the least. There were also some huge underdogs that cashed. Flat betting all dogs to win would have turned a nice profit.

• Point Spread Trends: Targeting underdogs has paid off to kick off bowl season. Underdogs have gone 13-5 ATS in the first 18 bowl games this season. With teams that are generally relatively close in talent and neutral fields, it makes sense that underdogs have performed so well.

• Game Total Trends: The over/under record is split at 9-9 to begin bowl season. There’s nothing to glean from game total trends yet. However, teams that have typically played to the under have in-bowl games as well. For example, New Mexico State, Miami (OH), and Coastal Carolina were all teams that trended to the under this season and all three teams went under in bowl games.

We’re now going to look at some of the top performers in our NCAAF 2023 bowl report.

• Rickey Hunt (Ohio): 17 carries for 115 yards and 4 TDs + 1 reception for 18 yards and 1 TD
• George Holani (Boise State): 17 carries for 138 yards and 2 TDs + 1 reception for 45 yards
• Byrum Brown (South Florida): 19/26 for 214 yards and 3 TDs + 14 carries for 64 yards
• Emmanuel Michel (Air Force): 35 carries for 203 yards and 2 TDs
• Freddie Brock (Georgia State): 24 carries for 276 yards and 1 TD + 2 receptions for 15 yards
• Gio Lopez (South Alabama): 14/19 for 192 yards and 3 TDs + 7 carries for 88 yards and 1 TD
• Kelvin Dean (Florida A&M): 3 receptions for 87 yards and 2 TDs + 3 carries for 10 yards
• J. Michael Sturdivant (UCLA): 4 receptions for 142 yards and 1 TD
• Sean Atkins (South Florida): 6 receptions for 93 yards and 2 TDs
• Corey Rucker (Arkansas State): 5 receptions for 107 yards and 2 TDs
• Cadarrius Thompson (Georgia State): 5 receptions for 117 yards and 2 TDs
• Jamall Pritchett (South Alabama): 8 receptions for 127 yards and 2 TDs

These were some of the top performers on offense in the early bowl games.
