College Basketball Schedule Heats Up – January 5

Today’s college basketball schedule only has 10 games, but one of them is huge. No. 9 Illinois, which has been creeping up the rankings and has won four straight, will take on No. 1 Purdue tonight in a crucial early Big Ten matchup. The Boilermakers have won six straight, including a 92-84 win over then-No. 1 Arizona. Purdue’s college basketball schedule has been one of the toughest in the nation.

Just before Thanksgiving, Purdue played in the Maui Invitational. It was one of several holiday tournaments on the early season college basketball schedule. It was a big night for big men in the NBA last night. Nikola Jokic hit a wild 39-foot shot that banked in at the buzzer as Denver beat Golden State. In the only other game on the NBA schedule last night, Giannis Antetokounmpo put up 44 points in his first matchup with rookie sensation Victor Wembenyana, who had 27 for the Spurs. The Bucks won 125-121.

What else is going on in the sports world?

• Dalvin Cook finds a home: Remember, the Jets waived RB Dalvin Cook. Cook was hoping to land a spot with a Super Bowl contender before the season was over. His hopes are now a reality. Cook cleared waivers and was snagged by the Baltimore Ravens, one of the favorites to win Super Bowl LVIII.

• Pro Bowl snub: Detroit WR Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 112 passes (the same as Miami’s Tyreek Hill) for 1,371 yards and 7 touchdowns this season. Apparently, that wasn’t enough to get him selected to represent the NFC in this year’s Pro Bowl. 
• Green returns to Warriors facility: Draymond Green, who has been suspended indefinitely after his altercation with Jusuf Nurkic on Dec. 12, is set to return to the Golden State Warriors practice facility. He will begin practicing with his teammates ahead of a return to action. No date has been given yet as to when Green will play again. 
• Penguins win another: The Pittsburgh Penguins won again for the seventh time in their last 10 games. The Penguins beat Atlantic Division leader Boston 6-5 last night to move to 19-14-4 overall. Pittsburgh is one of three teams in the Metropolitan Division with 42 points, which is just two points behind Philadelphia. The Flyers hold the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference right now.

6. Tennis: The Brisbane International has reached the quarterfinals. Rafael Nadal lost yesterday. The women are also in the quarterfinals. No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka advanced with a two-set victory. The ASB Classic continues for both the men and women and the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open continues today for the men. The Adelaide International also starts today.  The Workday Canberra International continues today on the WTA Tour. Two more tournaments – the Hobart International and the Adelaide International – start today.
