Defending Champ Nuggets on a Tear – January 10

The Denver Nuggets have won nine of their last 11 games and will play at Utah tonight in the late game broadcast by ESPN. The Nuggets, the defending NBA champions, are 26-12 overall and sit in third place in the Western Conference standings. Minnesota (26-10) and Oklahoma City (24-11) are No. 1 and 2. 

Denver beat the Detroit Pistons 131-114 on Sunday. Jamal Murray had 37 points to lead the Nuggets. Former two-time MVP Nikola Jokic only had four points, but he contributed 16 assists and seven rebounds. Jokic is the team’s leading scorer averaging 25.5 points per game. The Nuggets star averages nearly a triple-double. In addition to his point total, Jokic averages 11.8 rebounds and 9.2 assists.

Nuggets at Utah Tonight

The Nuggets are at Utah tonight and face a pretty tough task. The Jazz were left for dead early this season. After starting the season 7-16, Utah has now won 11 of its last 15 games. The Jazz has won five of its last six, including the last two which were over Eastern Conference powerhouses Milwaukee and Philadelphia. Utah’s only loss in the last six games came at Boston.

What’s interesting is that Utah has won seven of the last 10 games against Denver. They are 8-2 ATS in those 10 games too. The Jazz are at home tonight where they have won their last five straight. Utah has also beaten Denver each of the last five times they have played the Nuggets at home. 

Denver has won eight of its last ten and is favored by 6.5 points tonight. Former two-time MVP Nikola Jokic leads the Nuggets averaging 25.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 9.2 assists. Jamal Murray scores 20.6 a game and is coming off a career-high 37 in Sunday’s win over the Detroit Pistons. Another NFL coach bites the dust. A significant injury is something bettors will have to factor into Sunday’s Steelers-Bills playoff game. • Vrabel fired: Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is the latest casualty in the NFL. Vrabel guided Tennessee to three straight playoff appearances but faltered in the last two seasons. This year’s 6-11 campaign in which the Titans averaged just 17.7 points per game and had a -9 turnover margin. 
• Draymond to return: Green practiced with his team for the first time in 3.5 weeks yesterday. He will be a full participant in practice until the league decides when he can play. Green has missed 13 games and the Warriors have suffered. They are currently 12th in the Western Conference standings with a 17-19 record.
• Watt out: Steelers LB T.J. Watt, the NFL’s sack leader with 19.0, will not play in Pittsburgh’s wild card game this Sunday at Buffalo. Watt suffered a knee injury – a grade 2 MCL sprain – that needs some time to heal. The Steelers also announced that Mason Rudolph would remain the team’s starting quarterback for the playoffs.

• Georgia back on top: After losing to Alabama in the SEC title game, Georgia, the two time defending CFP champion, was left out of the playoff this year. But, the Bulldogs are back. They are the betting favorite (+425) to win the 2024 CFP national championship.

Nuggets at Utah on ESPN 

Tonight’s Nuggets-Jazz game is a national telecast on ESPN. It should be a great game between two teams that are pretty hot right now. We mentioned that Utah is 11-4 in its last 15 games and Denver is 9-2 in its last 11. Check out our picks database throughout the day for Nuggets picks.

• College basketball: Huge night in college basketball last night. Both No. 1 and No. 2 went down. Purdue lost to Nebraska and Iowa State knocked off Houston. Nos. 3, 4, and 5 all play tonight. Interestingly, all three are on the road. Kansas is at UCF. UConn is at Xavier and Tennessee plays at Mississippi State.

• NBA: New Orleans is at Golden State in the first half of the ABC/ESPN Wednesday night doubleheader. The Nuggets and Jazz, of course, are the second game. They are two of the ten NBA games on the schedule tonight.
• NHL: It’s Wednesday and that means it’s time for the NHL’s TNT doubleheader. Minnesota plays at Dallas in the early game and Vegas is at Colorado in the late one. They are two of the three games (Montreal is at Philadelphia) on the schedule today.
• Soccer: None of the world’s elite soccer leagues are in action today, but you can find plenty of action in England, Europe, and Africa. There are a handful of international friendlies too.
• Tennis: The ASB Classic and Adelaide International for both men and women continue today. The Hobart International also continues for the women today. The preliminary rounds of the Australian Open for both men and women continue today.
