Sinner Ends Djokovic’s Reign as AO King
Understandably, Novak Djokovic was the bookies’ clear favorite to win the men’s singles tournament at the 2024 Australian Open. The legendary Serb had racked up 10 AO titles in 16 years between 2008 and 2023, including four of the previous five.
However, Jannik Sinner had other ideas. After cruising through the early rounds, the 22-year-old Italian knocked out Djokovic in the semifinals before coming from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev in an epic final.
Prior to the tournament, Djokovic was priced at +110 to defend his AO crown. Carlos Alcaraz (+240) and Medvedev (+450) were the second and third favorites, while Sinner was priced at +800. Still, Sinner managed to defy the odds and win his first major title.
Sabalenka Goes Back-to-Back in Melbourne
Despite triumphing at Melbourne Park in 2023, Aryna Sabalenka (+500) was the second favorite to win the women’s singles event in 2024. The defending champion found herself behind Iga Swiatek (+300) in the pre-tournament odds, but she swiftly changed that.
Sabalenka dropped only 11 games across her first four matches before eliminating Barbora Krejcikova and Coco Gauff to reach the final. In the showpiece, the Belarusian made light work of Qinwen Zheng to defend her title.
10 of the top 17 seeds failed to make it past the second round, while Swiatek fell before the fourth round. Despite the best efforts of the remaining contenders, Sabalenka didn’t drop a single set on her way to triumphing once again.
