Purdue Aware of Potential Upset Tonight – January 31

Purdue is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in the most recent men’s college basketball AP Top 25 poll. The Boilermakers are 19-2 overall and 6-2 in Big Ten conference play. Purdue will play at home tonight in Mackey Arena where they have not lost yet this season. Still, Purdue and head coach Matt Painter are aware of the possibility of a huge upset tonight. It has happened before.

The Boilermakers host Northwestern tonight. The Wildcats are enjoying a 15-5 season and they are 6-3 in the Big Ten. One of their wins came against this same Purdue team back on December 1 at home. Northwestern beat Purdue 92-88 behind 31 points from leading scorer Boo Buie. The 6-foot-2-inch guard averages 18.5 points per game this season for the Wildcats.

That isn’t the only Northwestern upset of Purdue. Going back to last season, the Wildcats also beat Purdue 64-58 last February in the only meeting of the season. That means that in the Northwestern-Purdue series, the Wildcats have won the last two straight. 

Purdue Aware of Upsets Last Night

College basketball upsets seem to happen in bunches. One day after Purdue, ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time, lost to Northwestern, No. 3 Marquette lost to Wisconsin and No. 7 Duke fell at Georgia Tech. Both the Badgers and Yellow Jackets were unranked at the time. What’s interesting is that Wisconsin is now ranked No. 6 in the country and is the first place team in the Big Ten with an 8-1 record. The Badgers are 16-4 overall.

Even more interesting is what happened last night in college basketball. It was Georgia Tech again who pulled off a 74-73 upset of No. 3 North Carolina. That wasn’t the only upset of a top-5 team either. No. Tennessee went down at home 63-59 to South Carolina. The Gamecocks are one of the more surprising teams in the country. They are 18-3 and 6-2 in a loaded SEC. The latest bracketology has South Carolina as a No. 8 seed. That could change. The Gamecocks play Tennessee again and No. 16 Auburn before the end of the regular season.

• Our soccer guy: Geovanny Araya is back in the top-5. He’s our resident soccer expert and yesterday he hit on two of three soccer picks. Geovanny earned $203 to add to his bankroll, which is up nearly $1000 over the last month.

Upsets Abound, Super Bowl Streak Stays Alive

Last night, two of the top-5 college basketball teams suffered losses. No. 2 Purdue hopes to avoid being a victim of another upset at the hands of Northwestern tonight. Another handful of ranked teams will play tonight. More on that later.

A very interesting Super Bowl streak stayed intact. It’s something that has occurred in each and every Super Bowl since the very first one in 1966. We’ll take a look at that as well as some other intriguing sports news.

Here’s what’s happening in sports.

• CBB upsets: No. 3 North Carolina fell victim to Georgia Tech (10-11) last night when Naithan George hit a layup with 7.7 seconds remaining to give the Yellow Jackets a 74-73 victory. Unranked South Carolina then watched as Ta’Lon Cooper hit a late-three pointer to give the Gamecocks a 63-59 upset of No. 5 Tennessee.

• Super Bowl streak: The Big 33 Classic is a high school football All-Star game that has been played since the 1950s. The game has taken on many forms but has always featured the best high school players in the state of Pennsylvania. Currently, the game pits PA all-stars against Maryland All-Stars. There has been at least one alum from the Big 33 Classic play in each and every Super Bowl. That streak stays alive this year with 49ers DT Kevin Givens. Givens, who played at Penn State, represented the PA team in 2015.
• Orioles sold: A group led by David Rubenstein will purchase the Baltimore Orioles for $1.725 billion. Rubenstein, who hails from Baltimore, will become the controlling owner. Owners, who meet this week in Orlando, must approve the sale by 75 percent vote.

Purdue Heads Up Tonight’s College Basketball Schedule

The No. 2 Purdue Boilermakers will host Northwestern tonight as 13-point favorites. Can the Wildcats pull a third straight upset over their Big Ten rivals? You’ll have to watch and find out. You should also check the members’ area for picks for tonight’s game. It’s not the only college basketball game on the schedule. Plus, there are NBA, NHL, and other sports on the schedule too.

1. NCAAB: The big one tonight is Northwestern at Purdue. The Wildcats have upset the Boilermakers in the last two straight, but both of those games were at Northwestern. No. 1 UConn also plays tonight. The defending national champions are at home against Providence.
2. NBA: There are 10 games on the NBA schedule tonight. It’s the Wednesday ABC/ESPN doubleheader. Phoenix is at Brooklyn and Milwaukee is at Portland in the late game.

3. NHL: It’s the last night on the ice before the All-Star break. There are three games on the schedule. Los Angeles at Nashville is the TNT game tonight.
4. Tennis: Round 1 of the Open Sud de France continues on the ATP Tour with a few Round 2 matches scheduled today. On the women’s side, the Thailand Open and Upper Austria Ladies Linz continue today.
5. Soccer: Elite level soccer can be found today with three matches in the English Premier League and two more in Spain’s La Liga. There are tons of matches in the South American professional leagues today.
