Stadium Series Energy Today at MetLife  – February 17

The NHL’s annual Stadium Series continues tonight when the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers get it on at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast by ABC and can be watched on ESPN+. The Stadium Series has been played every year since 2014. It is not the same as the Winter Classic.

The Winter Classic was first played in 2008 and is usually held on or around New Year’s Day. This year, Seattle hosted Vegas and the Kraken won the game, 3-0. The Stadium Series differs from the other outdoor NHL games in a couple of ways. First is the time frame. Stadium Series games are typically held in late January, February, or March. 

Stadium Series games are also always played in a baseball or football stadium. This year’s Stadium Series takes place at MetLife Stadium, which is the home of the NFL’s New York Jets and New York Giants. Also, the Stadium Series is exactly what it says it is – a series of games. The Winter Classic and the occasional Heritage Classic are a single game.

This Year’s Stadium Series

As mentioned, Philadelphia and New Jersey will play tonight in the first game of the 2024 Stadium Series. Tomorrow, it’s the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers in an afternoon game starting at 3 p.m. ET. This year’s two Stadium Series games will be the 14th and 15th in the series.

Next year’s Stadium Series will pit the Detroit Red Wings against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The game will be played on March 1 at Ohio Stadium. That is the home of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team. Stadium Series games are usually held in the northern states, though last year’s Stadium Series took place at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, N.C. That is the home of the N.C. State Wolfpack. 

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings have made the most Stadium Series appearances. Each team has played three games in the series. The Penguins hosted the Flyers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh in 2017. Two years later, the two teams played in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the NFL’s Eagles.

Stadium Series Kicks Off Tonight

Our Sports Hub experts are already hard at work on today’s schedule. It’s a pretty big one for a Saturday in February. The NBA All-Star weekend gives us some great prop bets and don’t forget the NHL’s Stadium Series Game 1 tonight. Twenty-six of the league’s 32 teams play today.

Here’s a look at today’s schedule.

1. NBA: The NBA All-Star weekend continues today with a number of activities. There is the HBCU Classic which features Virginia Union and Winston-Salem State at 2 p.m. ET. Tonight, it’s the Skills Challenge, the 3-point shooting contest, the Steph Curry-Sabrina Ionescu 3-point duel, and the annual Slam Dunk Contest.
2. NHL: It’s a huge day in the NHL. There are 13 games total. ABC will have a tripleheader capped off by the Stadium Series game between New Jersey and Philadelphia. 

3. NCAAB: Saturday is always a big day for college basketball. Today, 22 of the 25 AP Top 25-ranked teams in the country will play. There is a huge showdown in the Big East where No. 1 UConn hosts No. 4 Marquette.
4. Big time soccer: Today is also a big day for the best soccer leagues in the world. The English Premier League has six matches on the schedule today. There are also six matches in Germany’s Bundesliga and multiple matches in Spain’s La Liga and France’s Ligue 1.
5. The Genesis Invitational: Patrick Cantlay followed up his first-round 64 with a 65 yesterday. He maintains a five-stroke lead heading into today’s third round. Tiger Woods withdrew from the tournament due to an illness. Jordan Spieth was disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard.
6. MMA: UFC 298 takes place tonight at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The main event is a featherweight matchup between champion Alexander Volkanovski (26-3) and challenger Ilia Topuria (14-0). Get ready for tonight with Sports Hub’s UFC 298 predictions, odds, and preview. 
7. Tennis: Three tournaments – AB Amro Open, Delray Beach Open, and IEB+ Argentina Open – will end this weekend. Three more start up today – Qatar Exxon/Mobil Open, Rio Open, and the Mifel Tennis Open. On the WTA Tour, the Qatar Total Energies Open final will be tomorrow. Elena Rybakina will take on top seed Iga Swiatek. The Dubai Duty Tennis Championships also continue today.

A Look at Trending Sports

Every day, we take a look at what is happening in the world of sports. Some of what’s going on may have a direct effect on betting on a certain event. • Maryland legend passes away: Former Terrapins basketball coach Lefty Driesell passed away yesterday at age 92. Today, Maryland hosts No. 14 Illinois in a Big Ten matchup.
• Genesis Invitational drama: Jordan Spieth signed an incorrect scorecard and was DQ’d from the event yesterday. Tiger Woods has been sick. He chose to withdraw yesterday. Then, there’s the leader, Patrick Cantlay. The guy is on fire with a 64 and a 65 in the first two rounds.

• Mathurin wins Rising Stars MVP: Indiana’s Bennedict Mathurin led Team Jalen to a win in the Rising Stars event at the NBA’s All-Star weekend. Mathurin was named the Rising Stars MVP. 
• UFL getting ready: Veteran QB A.J. McCarron signed with the St. Louis Battlehawks of the newly formed United Football League. The UFL is the result of a merger between the USFL and XFL. The league will begin play on March 30.
• Ranked road teams: College basketball teams among the AP Top 25 playing on the road this season are 81-102-2 ATS. Ten ranked teams hit the road today. Three of those play ranked opponents.
