Two more teams will punch their tickets to the Big Dance tonight when the Sun Belt and Southern Conferences play their conference tournament championship games. East Tennessee State plays Samford for the Southern Conference title while Arkansas State and James Madison battle for the Sun Belt crown.
The Sun Belt regular season champion, Appalachian State, was upset yesterday by the Red Wolves 67-65. Freddy Hicks hit a game-winning jumper at the buzzer to give Arkansas State the victory. Hicks finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. Teammate Caleb Fields led the winners with 23 points. Both players will need to be on point tonight as Arkansas State faces James Madison, which is 30-3 on the season.
Sun Belt Conference Tournament Preview
James Madison opened the 2023-24 college basketball season with one of the big upsets of the year. JMU beat then No. 4 Michigan State 79-76 in overtime. That win kicked off a run of 14 straight wins to start the season. The Dukes found themselves ranked in the AP Top 25 until their first loss at Southern Miss on Jan. 6.
JMU lost just two more games this season, both in the Sun Belt and both to Appalachian State. Since their last loss to the Mountaineers on Jan. 27, the Dukes have won 12 games in a row. JMU beat Arkansas State on the road on Feb. 7, 77-73, in the only meeting between the two teams this season. Noah Friedel, who averages 12.2 points per game, had 19 points and 10 rebounds in that game.
Arkansas State (18-15, 11-7) has won eight of its last nine games. Its only loss in that run was also to Appalachian State in Sun Belt play. The Red Wolves avenged that 23-point loss with yesterday’s upset in the Sun Belt Conference semifinals. Hicks and Fields are two of five Arkansas State players that average in double figures.
The winner of tonight’s game earns the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Sun Belt will have a new champion. Louisiana, which was also beaten by Arkansas State, won the conference tournament last year.
