NCAAW Championship Battle Today in Cleveland

Purdue and UConn advanced to the men’s NCAA championship game on Monday night with wins in yesterday’s Final Four. Today, it’s the women that are on center stage as Iowa and South Carolina battle in the NCAAW championship game. Today’s game will be played at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and will feature national player of the year Caitlin Clark against the No. 1 team in the nation in South Carolina.

Clark has had an amazing season, breaking tons of scoring records but, most importantly, she has brought the Hawkeyes back to the NCAAW championship game. Clark and Iowa made it to last year’s NCAAW championship, but lost to LSU. On the way to a 34-4 season, Clark set a number of records, including the NCAA career scoring mark. She’s done just about everything except win an NCAAW championship.

NCAAW Championship Preview

Getting that elusive NCAAW championship will not be easy for Clark and the Hawkeyes. They will face the juggernaut known as South Carolina. The Gamecocks are a perfect 37-0. Their closest tournament game was a 79-75 win over Indiana, a game that South Carolina was in control of the entire way. Every time Indiana tried to make a move, the Gamecocks would counter. South Carolina won its other tournament games by 22, 19, 47, and…wait for it…52!

Over the past three seasons, head coach Dawn Staley has led South Carolina to seasons of 35-2, 36-1, and now 37-0. They have won one NCAAW championship and have been to each of the past three Final Fours. Kamilla Cardoso is the Gamecocks 6-7 center and leading scorer. She averages 14.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Cardoso and her supporting cast go into today’s NCAAW championship game as 6.5-point favorites over Clark and the Hawkeyes.

Hoops Is Still Trending

If you were with us yesterday, you know that basketball was the big trend. The men’s Final Four took place and Purdue and UConn, both No. 1 seeds, advanced to tomorrow night’s championship game. Today, we have the NCAAW championship. We also have 13 NBA games as the league moves into its final week of the regular season. 

Let’s see what else is going on.

• UConn, Purdue advance: It really wasn’t a surprise, but Purdue pounded on Cinderella NC State in a 63-50 win in the first of yesterday’s two Final Four games. In the nightcap, UConn left no doubt in the second half and beat Alabama 86-72. The Huskies and Boilermakers will meet tomorrow night in the national title game.
• Lakers on the move: The Lakers crushed Cleveland last night 116-97 to win for the ninth time in ten games and move into eighth place in the Western Conference standings. Los Angeles is just a game and a half out of sixth place. That spot is currently occupied by Phoenix.

• Messi is back: Lionel Messi, who missed several games for Inter Miami in MLS play, came back yesterday and scored just 12 minutes into his return. Miami and Colorado played to a 2-2 draw.

NCAAW Championship This Afternoon

1. NCAAW championship: Iowa lost in last year’s NCAAW championship game to LSU. The Hawkeyes beat the Tigers in the national semifinals to get back to the title game. They will take on 37-0 South Carolina today at 3 p.m. at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland. The Gamecocks have lost just three games in the last three seasons combined.

2. Big day on the hardwood: There are 13 NBA games today. NBATV has a tripleheader featuring Houston at Dallas to get things started at 3 p.m. ET. New York plays in Milwaukee at 7 p.m. and Minnesota is in Los Angeles to face the Lakers starting at 10 p.m. ET.
3. Sunday night baseball: There are 15 MLB games today. Fourteen of those are afternoon games and Houston and Texas will play on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN. The Rangers beat the Astros last night 7-2. Ronel Blanco, who pitched this season’s first no-hitter, takes the mound for Houston against Dane Dunning of the Rangers.
4. NHL season winding down: There are nine games on the NHL schedule today. Buffalo is at Detroit to start things off at 1 p.m. The Red Wings still have a shot at the playoffs. That game will be broadcast by TNT. The day ends with Dallas playing in Colorado. That game is on ESPN with the puck drop at 10:00 p.m. ET.
5. Big Premier League match: Manchester United takes on Liverpool in a huge Premier League match today. There are two others on the schedule as well. Bettors can find action in Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, and there is one MLS match today – Sporting Kansas City plays the Portland Timbers.
6. ATP, WTA Finals: On the ATP Tour today, the finals of the Fayiz Sarofim & Co. US Men’s Clay Court Championships, the Millenium Estoril Open, and the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakesh will all take place. The women continue in their three separate WTA Tour events. They will play their finals in the Charleston Open, the Copa Colsanitas, and the Open Internacional Femini Solgirones.
7. NASCAR: It’s the Martinsville Cook Out 400 from Martinsville Speedway in Virginia. Race time is 3 p.m. and Kyle Larson will start in the pole.
8. PGA Tour: Akshay Bhatia continues to lead the Valero Texas Open. Bhatia shot a third-round 68 to maintain his hold on the lead. The final round is today.
9. UFL: After two great games yesterday, UFL Week 2 continues. The Birmingham Stallions will travel to Detroit to take on the Michigan Panthers in a matchup of 1-0 teams. The Houston Roughnecks will face the D.C. Defenders in today’s other game.
