MLB roundup: Cubs combine to no-hit Pirates

Shota Imanaga threw seven innings of a combined no-hitter as the Chicago Cubs dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0 on Wednesday. Nate Pearson and Porter Hodge each pitched a perfect inning to complete the 18th no-hitter in Cubs history.

Imanaga (12-3) delivered a brilliant performance, striking out seven batters and walking two over 95 pitches. This was the first time the Pirates were no-hit since Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox achieved the feat on August 25, 2020.

White Sox End 12-Game Losing Streak with 8-1 Win Over Orioles

The Chicago White Sox snapped their 12-game losing streak with a commanding 8-1 victory against the Baltimore Orioles. Jonathan Cannon (3-9) delivered a strong performance, working 5 2/3 innings while allowing just one run.

Cannon ended his personal four-game losing streak, securing his first win since August 6. Despite Baltimore’s (81-60) recent hot streak, the White Sox finally prevailed in their seventh meeting with the Orioles this year.

Phillies 4, Blue Jays 2: Kyle Schwarber’s Power Surge Leads Philadelphia

Kyle Schwarber homered for the fourth time in two games as the Philadelphia Phillies secured a 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Cristopher Sanchez pitched seven effective innings, helping Philadelphia complete a sweep of the two-game series.

Schwarber’s solo blast followed his three-home-run game on Tuesday. Kody Clemens and J.T. Realmuto also homered for the Phillies, who won the season series 3-1 over Toronto.

Royals 4, Guardians 1: Tommy Pham’s Homer Lifts Royals to Victory

Tommy Pham hit a tiebreaking home run, and Seth Lugo pitched seven solid innings to help the Kansas City Royals end their seven-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Lugo (15-8) allowed just one run while extending his MLB-leading total to 186 innings pitched.

This loss tightens the Guardians’ AL Central lead to just 4 1/2 games over both Kansas City and the Minnesota Twins, who also lost to the Rays.

Reds 12, Astros 5: Nine-Run First Inning Powers Cincinnati Over Houston

Jonathan India started a nine-run first inning with a leadoff homer, while Elly De La Cruz added two doubles and three RBIs to help the Cincinnati Reds crush the Houston Astros 12-5. Cincinnati has now beaten Houston eight straight times, dating back to 2016.

Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti (7-12) lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up nine runs on six hits before being pulled.

Braves 5, Rockies 2: Jarred Kelenic’s Homer Sparks Atlanta to Victory

Jarred Kelenic hit a three-run homer in the first inning, helping the Atlanta Braves secure a 5-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. Braves starter Charlie Morton (8-7) struck out eight batters over five innings, allowing only two runs.

Colorado starter Bradley Blalock (1-2) struggled early but managed to settle down, working five innings and allowing just four runs.

Mariners 16, Athletics 3: Seattle Offense Explodes in Series Finale

Luis Urias homered and drove in four runs as the Seattle Mariners crushed the Oakland Athletics 16-3. Mitch Garver also added four RBIs as Seattle rebounded from dropping the first two games of the series.

Oakland’s JP Sears (11-10) gave up five runs over six innings, as the Athletics failed to sustain their recent strong performance.

Mets 8, Red Sox 3: Jesse Winker’s Grand Slam Helps New York Sweep Boston

Jesse Winker hit a grand slam in the first inning, leading the New York Mets to an 8-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. The Mets completed a three-game series sweep and extended their winning streak to seven games.

Boston’s Jarren Duran contributed two hits, but the Red Sox have now lost five straight games.

Cardinals 3, Brewers 2 (10 innings): Luken Baker’s Pinch-Hit Single Lifts St. Louis

Luken Baker delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cardinals capitalized on automatic runner Masyn Winn scoring from second after an intentional walk to Nolan Arenado.

With the loss, Milwaukee’s lead in the NL Central shrinks slightly, while the Cubs gained ground with their no-hit victory over the Pirates.

Marlins 4, Nationals 3 (10 innings): Xavier Edwards’ Walk-Off Single Ends Miami’s Thriller

Xavier Edwards’ walk-off single in the 10th inning gave the Miami Marlins a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals. Marlins rookie Valente Bellozo pitched six-plus scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.

Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore was perfect through 5 1/3 innings but finished his outing allowing one run and striking out nine.

Rays 9, Twins 4: Yandy Diaz Homers as Tampa Bay Routs Minnesota

Yandy Diaz hit a two-run homer in Tampa Bay’s eight-run fourth inning, leading the Rays to a 9-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Diaz’s home run, his 13th of the season, capped off the scoring in the Rays’ big inning.

Carlos Santana homered for the Twins, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Tampa Bay’s offensive onslaught.

Rangers 10, Yankees 6: Texas Outduels New York in High-Scoring Game

Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven strong innings, while Wyatt Langford and Ezequiel Duran each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to help the Texas Rangers defeat the New York Yankees 10-6. Eovaldi (11-7) allowed just two runs over his seven innings.

Juan Soto was a bright spot for New York, going 3-for-3 with a home run, but the Yankees have now lost six of their last eight games.

Angels 10, Dodgers 1: Anaheim Dominates Rival LA with Power Surge

Griffin Canning allowed just one run over 6 2/3 innings, and the Los Angeles Angels used three home runs to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-1. Mickey Moniak’s three-run homer led the way, and Taylor Ward and Niko Kavadas also went deep for the Angels.

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani went hitless in four at-bats as the Dodgers managed just six hits in the game.

Diamondbacks 6, Giants 4: Zac Gallen Flirts with No-Hitter as Arizona Defeats San Francisco

Zac Gallen threw six no-hit innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4. Eugenio Suarez and Pavin Smith both homered for Arizona, which handed the Giants their fourth straight loss.

Gallen (11-6) allowed no hits and struck out six in his dominant outing, bouncing back after a rough previous start.

Padres 6, Tigers 5 (10 innings): Fernando Tatis Jr. Walk-Off Single Propels San Diego to Comeback Win

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give the San Diego Padres a thrilling 6-5 win over the Detroit Tigers. The Padres overcame a five-run deficit, with Jackson Merrill scoring the winning run.

The win keeps San Diego (80-61) half a game ahead of Arizona for the NL’s first wild-card spot.
