Jets 6, Penguins 3
Mason Appleton’s third-period goal and assist helped the Winnipeg Jets secure a 6-3 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. Appleton’s contributions came as part of a three-goal third period that allowed Winnipeg to pull away for their fifth consecutive win to start the season.
Mark Scheifele also contributed with his fifth goal of the season, while Nikolaj Ehlers, Josh Morrissey, and Colin Miller each provided two assists. Jets goalie Eric Comrie made an impressive 39 saves in his first start of the season.
For Pittsburgh, Lars Eller scored twice, but despite Alex Nedeljkovic’s 31 saves in his season debut, the Penguins fell short. With rookie Joel Blomqvist serving as the backup and Tristan Jarry a healthy scratch, Pittsburgh couldn’t mount a comeback after Winnipeg’s late surge.
Adam Lowry, Appleton, and Nino Niederreiter scored in the final period to clinch the win for Winnipeg.
