Golden Knights 4, Oilers 2

In Connor McDavid’s return, Noah Hanifin played hero for the Vegas Golden Knights with two third-period goals, including the game-winner with just 49 seconds left, to secure a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Hanifin, who’s been hot for Vegas, tied the game with a long shot at 10:05 before notching the winner from the left circle off a pass from Ivan Barbashev. Mark Stone added an empty-netter to seal the Knights’ first road win of the season and their sixth victory in the last seven games.

Jack Eichel contributed a goal and two assists, while Adin Hill turned aside 27 shots to help Vegas improve to 8-1-0 against Western Conference foes. McDavid, originally expected to be out two to three weeks after an ankle injury, logged 21:02 in his return, but the Oilers fell to 2-5-1 at home. Brett Kulak and Zach Hyman scored for Edmonton.

Capitals 3, Predators 2

Alex Ovechkin extended his goal streak to five games as the Washington Capitals edged the Nashville Predators 3-2. Ovechkin’s go-ahead goal came at 10:25 of the third period off a pinpoint feed from Dylan Strome, who had two assists on the night. Ovechkin’s milestone goal makes him only the third NHL player to achieve a five-game goal streak at age 39 or older, joining Brett Hull and Johnny Bucyk.

Logan Thompson made 33 saves, supporting Washington’s seventh consecutive home win. Nashville’s Juuso Parssinen and Steven Stamkos each found the back of the net, but Jusse Saros’s 33 saves weren’t enough to stop the Predators from losing their fourth game in the last five.

Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 1

Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat both tallied a goal and an assist to power the Detroit Red Wings past the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. Detroit ended Chicago’s two-game win streak with solid goaltending from Cam Talbot, who stopped 28 of 29 shots. Joe Veleno and Andrew Copp also contributed goals as the Red Wings claimed their second straight win after snapping a brief losing skid.

Nick Foligno scored the lone goal for Chicago, and Petr Mrazek made 21 saves as the Blackhawks narrowly outshot Detroit 29-25 but couldn’t capitalize on opportunities.
