Auston Matthews scored his first goal since returning from injury, and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the visiting Chicago Blackhawks for their second straight win.

John Tavares, Fraser Minten, and Matthew Knies also found the back of the net for Toronto. Goalie Anthony Stolarz stopped 27 shots to secure the victory. Matthews, playing in his second game since missing nine with an upper-body injury, opened the scoring late in the first period, marking his sixth goal of the season.

Lukas Reichel scored the lone goal for Chicago, which suffered its third consecutive loss. Arvid Soderblom made 18 saves in the defeat.

Devils 5, Rangers 1

Jack Hughes scored twice in the second period and Jesper Bratt added a goal and three assists as New Jersey dominated New York at Madison Square Garden.

Hughes’ performance included his 22nd career multi-goal game, while Bratt matched a career high with four points. The Devils were sharp defensively, with Jacob Markstrom stopping 38 shots and the team blocking 27 more.

Chris Kreider netted a power-play goal for the Rangers, who lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Stars 2, Utah Hockey Club 1

Casey DeSmith made 34 saves as Dallas edged Utah in a tightly contested game in Salt Lake City.

Evgenii Dadonov and Jamie Benn scored second-period goals for the Stars, who extended their winning streak to three games.

Nick Schmaltz tallied for Utah, scoring his third goal in two games. Karel Vejmelka stopped 19 shots for Utah, which failed to earn back-to-back wins despite coming off a 6-0 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights.
