It’s the 2023 version of Trash Night Football. Seriously, Thursday night football has absolutely sucked this season. Tonight, it’s more of the same. NFL fans get treated to the liver and onions of football. Mmmmm. Carolina and Chicago. Two teams that will compete for another top-5 draft pick next year.
Tonight’s trash night football matchup comes one week after that barn burner from last week. Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett threw for 160 yards…yep, a buck-sixty…and the Steelers beat Tennessee 20-16. Fans were treated to the anemic Steelers offense going up against rookie QB Will Levis of the Titans. Levis threw a pick and got sacked four times. Another trash night football game.
Trash Night Football Schedule
So far this NFL season, we’ve been treated to some doozies on Thursday night. How about the Bears-Commanders fiasco in Week 5? It was one of two games this season the Bears didn’t need a map to find the end zone. Chicago won 40-20. The two teams’ combined records right now are 6-12. If I could throw up in my mouth right now, I would.
How about all the lopsided trash night football matchups? Thursday night has given us these David vs. Goliath battles. There was the Week 3 beauty when the 49ers played the Giants. The G-men have the worst offense in the NFL and San Francisco started the season with five straight wins, including this one. Then, in Week 6, more trash night football with the Broncos, now 3-5, going up against the Chiefs who are now 7-2.
Betting Trash Night Football
There have been nine trash night football games so far this season. Of those nine, four have ended with double-digit scoring margins. The average scoring margin in these trash night football games so far this season is 9.67 points. Meh, these games could be better, but there are some things that bettors can take advantage of.
For the second straight week, we are given two teams that rank in the bottom half of the league in scoring. The Panthers are 25th in scoring, averaging 18.1 points per game. The Bears are 18th at 21.4. For the second straight week, oddsmakers have set the trash night football game total below 40. Tonight’s total is 38.5. Last week, the Steelers-Titans total was 37.
In each of the past two weeks, the total for the Thursday Night Football game has gone Under. The Under is 5-4 overall on Thursday night, which happens to be part of a larger trend in NFL primetime games. So far this season, the Under is 22-7 in all primetime games. These NFL night games are averaging just 36.3 points per game. Tonight’s trash night football matchup pits two more garbage offenses. Will the trend continue? You might want to visit the Sports Hub picks database and see how our expert cappers are picking tonight’s game.
Leaderboard Top 4 All Sports Hub Experts
Just because it’s trash night football doesn’t mean you can’t find some value somewhere. That’s exactly what the top four handicappers on yesterday’s leaderboard did. Our experts win on a consistent basis regardless of the matchups. What gives a garbage game a little more excitement? When you have some skin in the game!
Last night, the elite handicappers here at Sports Hub had skin in several games and came away with a little bit more jingle in their pockets. The top-7 cappers on the board all won at least $200 and six of them were our experts. Going deeper down the board, the top-32 all won at least $100. With so many winners, you are sure to find a consensus on tonight’s game.
Let’s review what happened yesterday.
- Jonesin’ for wins: Robert Jones put four picks in the system yesterday. He went 4-0 on picks that included an NBA first quarter spread and a tennis moneyline pick. Robert added $400 to his bankroll and is now up $1056 for the last 30 days. He’s got one NHL pick in the system for tonight. Will he have more?
- Big three days for Logan: Logan Wilson is having a nice three-day stretch. Last night, he correctly predicted the Ottawa Senators (+142) to upset the Toronto Maple Leafs. Logan wound up 3-0 and won $342. Over the last three days, Logan is 9-2 and has collected $722 in winnings. He has picks in the system already. Does he have one for trash night football?
- Another run for Jacob: Similar to Logan, Jacob Hoffman has been on a tear recently. Last night, he also nailed an NHL underdog – the Kings (+114) – to go 3-0. Jacob won $314 yesterday, which gives him a three-day total of $404. He’s won $590 over the last week and is now up $1077 for the last 30 days. Jacob does have NFL picks in the system. You’ll have to see for yourself if he has a trash night football pick.
- Grant more wins: Al Grant picked up some more wins last night. That’s something he’s used to. Al went 3-0 and won $300. Over the last seven days, Al is 14-7 and has added $565 to his bankroll.
Overall, another great day for all of our handicappers, especially those that are exclusive to Sports Hub. Visit the members’ area to see who has picks for tonight’s trash night football matchup between the Bears and Panthers.
Winner’s Win and Other Trending News
The NBA had a full schedule yesterday and we saw winners do what they do best. The Michigan thing just won’t go away and Bryce Harper gets a home on the corner. There’s a lot of trending sports news.
Let’s take a look at some key trending items.
- Harper to 1st: Bryce Harper will become the Philadelphia Phillies full-time first baseman in 2024. Rhys Hoskins, who tore an ACL in spring training this year, is a free agent and might not return. Kyle Schwarber has slid right into the Phillies lineup as the DH.

The defending champion Denver Nuggets got 35 points and 13 rebounds from Nikola Jokic and beat Golden State 108-105. The Nuggets are now 8-1. You can throw the Philadelphia 76ers into the mix too. - Big Ten, NCAA, Michigan: As required by the Big Ten’s sportsmanship policy, the conference sent a letter to Michigan warning the university’s football program of impending discipline. Michigan responded, “We remain steadfast in our conviction that due process matters.” The No. 3 Wolverines (9-0) are a 4-point road favorite against No. 10 Penn State (8-1) this Saturday.
Today’s Schedule – More Trash Night Football
The Bears-Panthers is definitely not the quality Thursday night matchup that we would like. However, bettors can find something to bet on in tonight’s game. Maybe you just bet against the Panthers. They have the worst ATS record in the NFL – 1-6-1. But, if you simply fade Carolina, you might want to buy the hook.
Remember yesterday? Yeah, I know. It’s been a whole 24 hours, but we talked about the hook. Chicago is favored by 3 tonight. You could buy the hook, or the half-point, and take the spread down to Chicago -2.5. That way, you’ll avoid a push. Plus, more NFL games end with a scoring margin of three points. If the Bears win by 3, you win!
Anyway, there is Thursday night football tonight, but it isn’t the only game in town.
- Trash night football: Will it be another trash night football game or can we put the Thursday back in Thursday Night Football? As mentioned, the Bears are a 3-point favorite over the Panthers tonight. Check our database for NFL picks for the game.
- ACC matchup: Virginia (2-7) plays at No. 11 Louisville (8-1) tonight in a matchup of ACC teams. It’s one of two college football games on the schedule. Southern Miss (2-7) takes on Louisiana (5-4) in a Sun Belt clash.
- NBA doubleheader: Only two games are on the NBA schedule tonight. Milwaukee plays at Indiana and Atlanta takes on Orlando in the late game.
- Thursday on the ice: If trash night football puts you to sleep, head on over to Hulu for an NHL doubleheader. Dallas plays at Columbus in the early game. Edmonton is at San Jose in the nightcap. Those are two of 11 games on tonight’s NHL schedule.
