ACC basketball takes center stage today with seven games on the schedule. Two of the top 10 teams in the country will play today, both on the road. No. 8 Duke is at Wake Forest, another ACC basketball team that has a shot at the upcoming NCAA tournament. North Carolina, currently ranked No. 10 in the country, plays at Virginia today.
The Cavaliers are 20-7 overall and 11-5 in conference play. They too should be a tournament team come March. Virginia has beaten North Carolina in ACC basketball play seven of the last ten times the two teams have played in Charlottesville. Both teams are coming off games against another ACC basketball team – Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels blew out the Hokies 96-81. Virginia had to go on the road to its rival and managed just 41 points in a 75-41 loss.
ACC Basketball History
ACC basketball has been synonymous with success in the sport. Since its beginning in 1953, the ACC has produced some of the best college basketball programs in the country. Even during UCLA’s dominant run in the 1970s under legendary head coach John Wooden, N.C. State won a national championship in 1974. In the early ‘80s, North Carolina and a young freshman named Michael Jordan won an NCAA tournament title in 1982. N.C. State captured another in 1983.
Duke and head coach Mike Krzyzewski was one of the most dominant teams in NCAAB history through the 1990s and early 2000s. Coach K and the Blue Devils won five national championships between 1991 and 2015. Three of the last eight national titles have been won by ACC basketball teams – North Carolina, Duke, and Virginia.
Interestingly, the latest ESPN bracketology has just four ACC teams making the NCAA tournament. The first team left out of the Big Dance is Wake Forest (17-9, 9-6). As it stands right now, Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia are locks to make the tournament field. Clemson (18-8, 8-7) is listed as a No. 5 seed right now. Pitt is also 17-9 and Syracuse, which beat North Carolina last week, is 17-10. Both of those teams are not among the current 68 in the latest bracketology.
