Top-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia survived an upset-riddled day by defeating Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the first round. However, both No. 2 Alex de Minaur of Australia and No. 3 Andrey Rublev of Russia were not as fortunate, with Marin Cilic (Croatia) toppling de Minaur 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and French qualifier Quentin Halys ousting Rublev 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Rublev had just won the title last week in Doha.
Meanwhile, No. 5 seed Ugo Humbert of France advanced, joined by Tallon Griekspoor (Netherlands), Felix Auger-Aliassime (Canada), Italians Luca Nardi and Matteo Berrettini, and Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Borges took down eighth-seeded Arthur Fils of France in straight sets.
Abierto Mexicano Telcel (Acapulco, Mexico)
Top-seeded Alexander Zverev, a 2021 champion at this event, overcame a first-set deficit to defeat Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4. Zverev, ranked No. 2 in the world, held off all three break points he faced in a two-hour, 44-minute match.
Fourth-seeded Holger Rune (Denmark) moved on with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena, while ninth-seeded Denis Shapovalov (Canada) cruised in straight sets over American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy 7-5, 6-2. Also notching wins were Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (Spain), Brandon Nakashima (U.S.) and Mexican wild-card Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez. In the late match, seventh-seeded Frances Tiafoe (U.S.) downed France’s Alexandre Muller 6-4, 6-2.

Due to widespread power outages, a curfew in Chile suspended play after six singles matches. Fifth-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry (Argentina) recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hugo Gaston (France), and sixth-seeded Mariano Navone (Argentina) defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-2, 6-2.
Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli rallied to upset seventh-seeded Nicolas Jarry of Chile 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (9). Eighth seed Luciano Darderi (Italy) fell to Portugal’s Jaime Faria 6-3, 6-4, while Argentinian qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Damir Dzumhur (Bosnia-Herzegovina) also advanced before the curfew took effect.
