Gael Monfils Wins Historic Title at ASB Classic

Gael Monfils became the oldest man in nearly five decades to win an ATP Tour-level title with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Zizou Bergs in the ASB Classic final in Auckland, New Zealand. At 38 years old, Monfils joins Australian legend Ken Rosewall, who won in Hong Kong at 43 in 1977, in achieving this remarkable feat.

Monfils dominated the match, winning 88 percent of points on his first serve and saving six break points in the 97-minute contest. Bergs, 25, struggled to match Monfils’ precision, converting just 71 percent of his first serves into points.

Both players now turn their attention to the Australian Open. Monfils will face fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round, while Bergs will take on Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina.
