Brazilian teenager João Fonseca saved two match points en route to a dramatic 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over home favorite Mariano Navone on Friday. The 18-year-old found himself down 15-40 and 30-40 with Navone serving for the match in the third set, but Fonseca rallied to break serve and extend the contest. He closed with 10 aces, saving 9 of 14 break points, to book his first career ATP semifinal.
Fonseca will next face Serbian qualifier Laslo Djere, who defeated Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild 7-6 (3), 6-3. Spain’s Pedro Martinez also advanced after No. 3 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy withdrew (leg injury). Top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany was slated to meet Argentina’s No. 5 seed Francisco Cerúndolo later Friday.

Top seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia breezed past Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 6-3, 6-2 to earn a semifinal berth, while second-seeded Ugo Humbert of France dismissed Italy’s No. 7 seed Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-4.

Up next, he’ll face No. 3 seed Alex Michelsen, who edged Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie 7-6 (3), 7-5.
In Friday’s night session, top seed Taylor Fritz (U.S.) was set to take on Spanish No. 8 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, while fourth-seeded Matteo Arnaldi of Italy clashed with American No. 6 seed Brandon Nakashima.
