Italian Matteo Berrettini shocked third-seeded Novak Djokovic 7-6 (4), 6-2 on Tuesday for his first victory in five head-to-head meetings with the Serbian. It was also Berrettini’s first win over a Top 10 player since 2023, and it came in the opening round of the hard-court event.

Second-seeded Alex de Minaur of Australia rolled past Russian Roman Safiullin 6-1, 7-5. No. 4 seed Daniil Medvedev outlasted defending champion Karen Khachanov of Russia 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and fellow Russian Andrey Rublev, the No. 5 seed, defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-4.

Sixth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece fell to Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-6 (5) in a marathon lasting two hours, 45 minutes. Portugal’s Nuno Borges, Italy’s Luca Nardi, Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, Zizou Bergs of Belgium, and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime also booked spots in the second round.

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev overcame a roller-coaster first set to defeat China’s Yunchaokete Bu 7-6 (4), 6-4 in their opening-round clash on clay. Zverev raced to a 3-0 lead, fell behind 5-4, then saved a set point before earning the tiebreak, eventually clinching a decisive break in the penultimate game of the second set.

Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo, seeded fourth, battled past France’s Hugo Gaston 7-6 (9), 6-0. Fifth-seeded Sebastian Baez topped Argentine lucky loser Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-3, 7-5. Eighth-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina edged Corentin Moutet of France 6-3, 7-6 (1), and fellow Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli rallied from a set down to upset seventh-seeded Spaniard Pedro Martinez 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Italy’s Luciano Darderi, Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur, and Portuguese lucky loser Jaime also advanced to the second round.
