Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka showcased his trademark resilience on Tuesday at the Bucharest Open, defeating Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1) in a grueling first-round match. Despite 30 unforced errors and facing 11 break points, Wawrinka saved his best for the clutch moments, winning the final two games of the third set at love before dominating the tiebreaker.
The 40-year-old Swiss veteran celebrated his recent birthday by grinding out a victory in three hours and 18 minutes to reach the second round in Romania.
Bautista Agut, Carabelli Move On
No. 5 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain also had to go the distance, eventually topping China’s Yunchaokete Bu in three sets. In contrast, No. 8 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina cruised past Moldova’s Radu Albot.
