There’s a full slate in the CFL this week and we have CFL Week 5 picks for all four games. Toronto are the only remaining undefeated team, while Edmonton and Hamilton are winless.

CFL Week 5 action starts tonight with the Roughriders hosting the Elks. Winnipeg hosts Calgary on Friday, Hamilton hosts Ottawa on Saturday and BC hosts Montreal on Sunday.

CFL Week 4 Results and Betting Recap

Here are the CFL Week 4 results and updated CFL betting trends:

  • Elks 7 vs. Redblacks 26 – Redblacks (-2.5) Covered ATS and Under 42.5
  • Blue Bombers 17 vs. Alouettes 3 – Blue Bombers (-6) Covered ATS and Under 48.5
  • Lions 24 vs. Argonauts 45 – Argonauts (+3) Covered ATS and Over 47.5

Favorites went 2-1 (2-1 ATS) in Week 4. Favorites are now 8-7 (8-7 ATS). The over/under record was 1-2 in Week 4, which brings the O/U record for the season to 6-9. I had my first losing week in the CFL, as I went 1-2 (-$120), but I’m still 9-5 (+$395) on the season and will bounce back with my CFL Week 5 picks.

Elks vs. Roughriders Prediction for Week 5

  • When: Thursday, July 6th 2023 at 9:00 PM ET
  • Where: Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan
  • Opening Spread: Roughriders -7.5 / Current Spread: Roughriders -7.5
  • Opening Total: 42.5 Points / Current Total: 44 Points

The Edmonton Elks (0-4 / 0-4 ATS) have been terrible to start the season. The flip-flopping at QB is going to continue, as Taylor Cornelius will start after Jarret Doege went 19/33 for 223 yards, 1 TD and 3 INTs in last week’s loss. The Elks average 58.5 RYPG (8th) and are the only team without a rushing touchdown.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-1 / 2-1 ATS) are coming off a bye week. Trevor Harris has thrown for 867 yards (3rd) and five passing TDs (3rd). RB Jamal Morrow has 233 rushing yards (3rd). The Riders are scoring 24.3 PPG (4th), but the defense is allowing 28.0 PPG (8th).

Edmonton rank last in scoring (12.8 PPG) and are allowing 27.0 PPG (7th). These teams met in Week 1, with the Roughriders winning a close game (17-13). With both teams struggling defensively, this total is too low. I also don’t trust the Riders at home, as they’re 1-6 ATS in their last seven games at Mosaic.

Stampeders vs. Blue Bombers Prediction for Week 5

  • When: Friday, July 7th 2023 at 8:30 PM ET
  • Where: IG Field in Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • Opening Spread: Blue Bombers -7.5 / Current Spread: Blue Bombers -8
  • Opening Total: 46.5 Points / Current Total: 46.5 Points

The Calgary Stampeders (1-2 / 1-2 ATS) take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3-1 / 3-1 ATS). These two teams met three times last season, with the Bombers going 3-0 (2-1 ATS).

Winnipeg bounced back from a Week 3 loss by dominating the Alouettes last week. I was surprised their defense held Montreal to a single field goal. Winnipeg are scoring 27.5 PPG (2nd) and allowing 22.8 PPG (4th), while the Stampeders are scoring 22.3 PPG (5th) and allowing 23.0 PPG (T5).

Both teams are running the football well. Winnipeg average 131.8 RYPG (2nd) and Brady Oliveira leads the league in rushing yards (327). Calgary are averaging 108.0 RYPG (4th). Defensively, the Bombers allow 74.8 RYPG (2nd) and the Stampeders allow 108.7 RYPG (7th).

Winnipeg QB Zach Collaros has a 110.2 QB rating (2nd) and seven passing TDs (2nd). Winnipeg are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games against teams with a losing record, but the Stampeders have been tough on the road (12-3-1 ATS in last 16 road games). Sign-up to Sports Hub for my CFL Week 5 picks.

Redblacks vs. Tiger-Cats Prediction for Week 5

  • When: Saturday, July 8th 2023 at 7:00 PM ET
  • Where: Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario
  • Opening Spread: Tiger-Cats -2.5 / Current Spread: Tiger-Cats -2.5
  • Opening Total: 43.5 Points / Current Total: 44 Points

The Ottawa Redblacks (1-2 / 1-2 ATS) got their first win of the season last week at home. They travel to play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-3 / 0-3 ATS) who are coming off a bye week.

Hamilton have been a mess and were blown out by Montreal in their only home game. The Ti-Cats went 6-3 at home last season and have won seven games in a row against Ottawa, including a 3-0 record last season. However, Hamilton were 1-2 ATS in the three head-to-head games against Ottawa last season.

Ottawa’s QB Tyrie Adams suffered a season-ending knee injury last week. QB Jeremiah Masoli is healthy enough to start this week and he’ll be playing his old team. Both teams have struggled offensively, as the Tiger-Cats are scoring 19.0 PPG (7th) and the Redblacks are scoring 17.7 PPG (8th).

The Redblacks have the edge on defense, as they’re allowing just 17.3 PPG (3rd). Hamilton have allowed more points than anyone else (37.3 PPG) and it isn’t even close. Hamilton are 9-1 ATS in their last ten games following a bye week, but the Redblacks are 8-2 ATS in the last ten H2H games in Hamilton.

Alouettes vs. Lions Prediction for Week 5

  • When: Sunday, July 9th 2023 at 7:00 PM ET
  • Where: BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Opening Spread: Lions -6.5 / Current Spread: Lions -7
  • Opening Total: 44.5 Points / Current Total: 45.5 Points

The BC Lions (3-1 / 3-1 ATS) host the Montreal Alouettes (2-1 / 2-1 ATS) on Sunday. Let’s hope last week was an anomaly for Lions QB Vernon Adams Jr., as he tossed six INTs in the loss to Toronto.

Will Alouettes and Lions go under again

Adams Jr. is going to be motivated to bounce back and he’s also playing against his old team. He leads the CFL in passing yards (1,249), passing touchdowns (8) and completion percentage (69.8%). The Als QB Cody Fajardo has the best QB rating (111.1) and ranks 1st in average gain per pass (11.4 yards).

One consistent problem for the Als has been protecting Fajardo. He was sacked four times last week and the Alouettes rank 8th in sacks allowed this season (15). BC are tied for first in sacks made (14) and will be bringing the heat this weekend. The Lions are scoring 25.3 PPG (3rd) and allowing 16.5 PPG (2nd), while the Als are scoring 20.0 PPG (6th) and allowing 13.7 PPG (1st).

Are we going to have a defensive battle in this game or will the two QBs bounce back? The under is 6-0 in the last six H2H games. The Lions are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games.
