Regular Updates to 2023-24 Stanley Cup Odds
We’ll be updating the 2024 Stanley Cup odds throughout the season. We’re also going to provide insights into why teams are moving up or down in price when there are any big line movements.
(June 13th, 2023): 2024 NHL Stanley Cup futures odds open up. The Avalanche (+800) opened up as the favorites for the fourth consecutive season. Next up are the Maple Leafs (+1100) and Oilers (+1100).
(July 18th, 2023): Colorado are now co-favorites with the Hurricanes at +900 odds. Carolina made a big splash during NHL free agency, bringing in Michael Bunting and Dmitry Orlov. The Flames have seen a big drop in their odds to win the 2024 Stanley Cup, as it’s clear the team will be rebuilding.
(October 16th 2023): NHL’s regular season started last week and we want to update bettors how the Stanley Cup odds for this futures market are adjusting. The Carolina Hurricanes (2-1) are now favored to win the Stanley Cup at +800 odds. Next are the New Jersey Devils (1-0-1) and Toronto Maple Leafs (2-0), having jumped up from +1100 to +900 odds after starting the season strong.
The Edmonton Oilers (0-2) and Colorado Avalanche (2-0) round out the top five in the market and are both sitting at +1000 odds to win the Cup. It’s also worth noting that the New York Rangers (1-1) have moved from +1700 to +1300 odds. The Tampa Bay Lightning (1-2) are one team that have dropped from +1400 to +2000 after a slow start. It’s still early in the season and there hasn’t been much Stanley Cup futures line movement yet, but we’ll keep you updated all season long.
(December 19th 2023): A lot has changed since our last update to the Stanley Cup odds. The Rangers (+750), Bruins (+750) and Avalanche (+750) are leading the 2024 Stanley Cup futures betting market. The Bruins and Rangers both have 43 points, which is the best mark in the Eastern Conference. Vegas (+800) have the best record in the NHL (21-6-5 / 47 points). The Stars (+1000) are tied at 40 points in the Central Division. The Vancouver Canucks (+2200) opened at +5000 and have been a big surprise, as they’re sitting at 44 points. The Toronto Maple Leafs (+1200) remain a contender in the Stanley Cup odds, but will they have success in the NHL playoffs? I wouldn’t count on it. Boston and Vegas look like the two top contenders to win the Stanley Cup in 2024 and I expect their odds to start shortening soon.
Edmonton Oilers Leading NHL Stanley Cup Odds
(February 7th 2024): Since our last Stanley Cup odds update, the Oilers have stormed back. The Oilers just had a 16 game winning streak, which jumped them up to third place in the Pacific Division. Edmonton are only 13-10-0 on the road this season, which is a concern for the NHL playoffs. The Avalanche (+750) and Bruins (+750) remain among the top contenders to win the 2024 NHL Stanley Cup. The Bruins are second in the league in points (71) and they lead the Atlantic Division. The Vancouver Canucks (+1200) still aren’t getting a lot of respect despite leading the league in points (73). Vancouver are 18-4-2 at home this season. The Ranger, Panthers and Hurricanes are all priced above the Canucks at +1000 odds. One team that stands out from a value perspective are the Golden Knights (+1300). Vegas are 19-5-2 at home and they’re currently on a 7-2-1 run. Could the Lightning (+2500) have one more Stanley Cup run in them this season? They’re third in the Atlantic after overtaking the Maple Leafs (+1400) in the division.
Top Contenders to Win the Stanley Cup in 2024
Here are the top contenders to win the 2024 NHL Stanley Cup:
Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche have consistently been among the top contenders the last several years. Colorado were Stanley Cup champions in 2022, but they were upset in the first round of the 2023 NHL playoffs by the Kraken. The team’s top three players (Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Cale Maker) return.
Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina were swept in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals by the Panthers and are expected to contend again this season. The Hurricanes ranked 1st in xGoals % (58.32%) and 2nd in GAA (2.40) during the 2022-23 regular season. With Orlov in the mix, the Hurricanes will play an even tougher defensive brand of hockey.

New Jersey Devils
The Devils have a young core, including Jack Hughes (22), Nico Hischier (24) and Jesper Bratt (24). They were eliminated in the second round of the 2023 NHL playoffs by Carolina (4-1). New Jersey ranked 2nd in xGoals % (56.5%) and 4th in goals scored (3.5 GPG) during the 2022-23 regular season.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto advanced out of the first round of the 2023 NHL playoffs for the first time since 2013. The core of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares are all back. The Leafs were one of the most balanced teams last regular season, ranking 7th in GPG (3.4) and 6th in GAA (2.56).
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers were eliminated in the second round of the 2023 NHL playoffs by Vegas (4-2). Edmonton will remain a top contender as long as they have Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Edmonton ranked 1st in scoring (4.0 GPG) and 3rd in xGoals % (56.07%) during the 2022-23 regular season.
Some other contenders based on the current Stanley Cup odds include the Golden Knights, Lightning, Bruins, Stars and Rangers. These ten teams are the top contenders to win the Stanley Cup in 2024.
NHL Stanley Cup Betting Trends
Here are some interesting Stanley Cup betting trends to help NHL handicappers:
- Since the 2014-15 NHL season, the Stanley Cup odds offseason favorite has gone on to win the Cup in three out of nine years (Blackhawks in 2015, Lightning in 2020 and Avalanche in 2022).
- Dating all the way back to the 1985 Stanley Cup, only one team has finished runner-up and gone on to win the Cup the following season (Penguins were runner-ups in 2008 and won in 2009).
- Since the 2009 Stanley Cup, only nine teams have won the Cup in 15 years. Two teams have won back-to-back Cups in that span (Penguins 2016/2017 and Lightning 2020/2021).
- The Presidents’ Trophy has been awarded since the 1985-86 season. Only eight teams have won the Presidents’ Trophy and the Cup in the same year (Last team: Blackhawks 2012-13). In the last eight seasons, the Presidents’ Trophy winner hasn’t advanced past the second round.
Past Stanley Cup Winners
Here are the past Stanley Cup winners since 2015, including the team’s offseason Stanley Cup odds:
- 2023: Vegas Golden Knights (+1800)
- 2022: Colorado Avalanche (+600)
- 2021: Tampa Bay Lightning (+900)
- 2020: Tampa Bay Lightning (+675)
- 2019: St. Louis Blues (+3000)
- 2018: Washington Capitals (+1125)
- 2017: Pittsburgh Penguins (+1100)
- 2016: Pittsburgh Penguins (+1300)
- 2015: Chicago Blackhawks (+700)
*The odds in brackets were the team’s Stanley Cup odds during the offseason.
As you can see, not a lot of offseason longshots win the NHL Stanley Cup. Seven of the previous nine winners have had offseason Stanley Cup odds of +1300 or lower. The Blues are the biggest offseason longshot to win the Cup since the Hurricanes (+6000) won the 2006 Stanley Cup.
What’s more incredible about the Blues Cup run in 2019 was that they were the first team since the NHL expansion era (1967-68) to go from last place at any point after a team has played 20 games to playing in the Cup. St. Louis were +10000 odds to win the 2019 Cup at the NHL All-Star break.
