The 2023 Major League Soccer season is back in full swing following Lionel Messi’s Leagues Cup heroics for Inter Miami. Accordingly, we have some Week 28 MLS picks for you.
FC Cincinnati has opened up an eight-point lead at the summit of the Eastern Conference, while St. Louis City leads Los Angeles FC by four points atop the Western Conference. With the MLS Cup Playoffs on the horizon, things are beginning to heat up.
I will share my Week 28 MLS picks with you in due course. First, let’s review Week 27 and check out the MLS odds for this weekend’s fixtures.
What Happened in Week 27?
Before you lock in your Week 28 MLS picks, it only makes sense to assess the results from Week 27. After all, there were plenty of notable results in Major League Soccer last weekend.
Here’s what happened:
- Columbus Crew 3-0 FC Cincinnati
- New York Red Bulls 1-0 DC United
- New York City 0-2 Minnesota United
- Toronto FC 2-3 CF Montreal
- Houston Dynamo 5-0 Portland Timbers
- Chicago Fire 1-3 Orlando City
- St. Louis City 6-3 Austin FC
- Vancouver Whitecaps 0-1 San Jose Earthquakes
- Seattle Sounders 0-2 Atlanta United
- Los Angeles FC 4-0 Colorado Rapids
The standout result of Week 27 is undoubtedly the nine-goal thriller between St. Louis City and Austin FC. Nicholas Gioacchini and Samuel Adeniran both scored twice for St. Louis, capping a memorable match for the home team.
However, that wasn’t the only thrashing last weekend. Houston Dynamo crushed Portland Timbers 5-0 in Texas before Los Angeles FC claimed a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids.
Other MLS betting trends to consider include the high number of clean sheets in Week 27, with the Colombus Crew, New York Red Bulls, Minnesota United, Houston, San Jose Earthquakes and Atlanta United all achieving shutouts.

As you can see, FC Cincinnati, Columbus Crew, Sporting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake and Los Angeles Galaxy are the heavy home favorites this weekend. Atlanta United, CF Montreal, DC United, New York Red Bulls, Orlando City, FC Dallas, Portland Timbers and Minnesota United are also favored to triumph on home soil.
Interestingly, only one team – Los Angeles FC – is favored to win on the road in Week 28. Why? Because LAFC occupies second place in the Western Conference, while Charlotte FC sits 12th in the Eastern Conference.
Best Week 28 MLS Picks
Week 28 of the 2023 Major League Soccer season commences on Saturday, August 26. In fact, 13 of the 14 games take place on Saturday. The only game scheduled for Sunday is Minnesota United vs. Seattle Sounders.
You will be pleased to learn that I have scoured the odds to find the best Week 28 MLS picks out there. With 14 games to choose from, there is no shortage of MLS betting opportunities on offer this weekend.
Now that you’re up to speed on everything you need to know ahead of the weekend’s action, let’s dive into my Week 28 MLS picks and predictions.
Atlanta United vs. Nashville SC Prediction
Nashville enjoyed an impressive 10-game unbeaten streak in MLS between April and June, picking up seven wins and three draws along the way. Since then, however, Nashville has suffered five defeats in six league outings.
It is also worth noting that Gary Smith’s men have received a whopping five red cards in their last four MLS matches, pointing towards a disciplinary issue within the squad.
On the flip side, Atlanta United heads into Week 28 on a run of three victories in five league games. Since the Five Stripes have lost just two of their 12 MLS home matches this season, I’m backing them to dispatch off-form Nashville.
Best Bet: Atlanta United (+105)
FC Cincinnati vs. New York City Prediction
Few would argue that Cincinnati has not been the best team in Major League Soccer this year. After all, the Eastern Conference leader has suffered only three defeats across 24 MLS outings in 2023, securing 15 wins and six draws in the process.
By contrast, New York City has endured a season to forget up to now. The Boys in Blue have managed to win just five of their 25 league games this year, and they have also scored 14 goals fewer than Cincy.
NYCFC returned to MLS action with a 2-0 defeat against Minnesota United, meaning Nick Cushing’s men have failed to win any of their last four league games. With that in mind, Cincinnati will be hopeful of picking up a positive result this weekend.

Minnesota United vs. Seattle Sounders Prediction
The last of my Week 28 MLS picks concerns the clash between Minnesota United and Seattle Sounders. This looks destined to be a close-fought battle, with only five points separating ninth-placed Minnesota and fourth-placed Seattle in the West.
It is worth pointing out, however, that the Sounders have failed to win any of their last three MLS games, taking one point from a possible nine. As for the Loons, they have taken seven points from their last three matches, scoring six goals for good measure.
Minnesota has suffered only two defeats in 10 home league games this year, while Seattle has remained inconsistent on the road. Sign in to access all of my Week 28 MLS picks, including the recommended bet for this showdown.
