Tauchman’s Heroics Lift Cubs to Walk-Off Win Over Cardinals

Pinch hitter Mike Tauchman doubled home the winning run to cap a thrilling three-run bottom of the ninth, leading the host Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 walk-off victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday in the opener of a four-game series.

Tauchman sliced a 2-2 fastball from Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley (4-4) into the left-field corner, driving in Dansby Swanson for the decisive run. The Cubs trailed 4-2 entering the ninth against Helsley, who had successfully converted 33 of his previous 35 save opportunities.

Cody Bellinger ignited the comeback with a solo homer to left-center, his 11th of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Swanson then tied the game with an RBI double, setting the stage for Tauchman’s heroics. Nate Pearson (1-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings of one-hit relief. Seiya Suzuki also homered for Chicago.

Atlanta hit three home runs to back the solid starting pitching of Charlie Morton, securing a win over visiting Miami in the opener of a four-game series.
