Starling Marte delivered a game-winning single in the 10th inning to give the New York Mets a 2-1 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals on Monday.

After Tyrone Taylor was intentionally walked to begin the 10th, Francisco Alvarez nearly ended the game with a deep fly ball to right, advancing pinch-runner Harrison Bader to third. Marte stepped up five pitches later and lined a 3-1 fastball from Jacob Barnes (8-3) into left field, easily scoring Bader from third.

This victory gave the Mets (82-68) their 11th walk-off win of the season, snapping a two-game losing streak. The win also provided a crucial one-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the race for the third National League wild-card spot, as the Braves (81-69) lost to the Dodgers on Monday night.

Irvin Shines, Tena Extends Streak

Washington starter Jake Irvin impressed, allowing just one run on four hits over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one, relying heavily on groundball outs. Jose Tena continued his hot streak, extending his on-base streak to 12 straight games with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Despite a strong outing from Paul Skenes (10-3), who allowed one run over six innings and struck out seven, Pittsburgh couldn’t generate any offense. The Pirates have now lost three of their last four games.

William Contreras drove in two runs, and Aaron Civale allowed one run in five-plus innings as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto, making just his second start since returning from a strained rotator cuff, pitched four scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out three. The win went to Evan Phillips (4-1), who pitched a perfect fifth inning as the Dodgers’ bullpen finished off the shutout.

Shota Imanaga threw six quality innings, and Dansby Swanson homered and drove in four runs, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 9-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Padres 3, Astros 1: Darvish Dominates as Padres Defeat Astros
