The NFL coaching carousel might start to whirl once again. On Sunday, we witnessed veteran NFL head coach Mike McCarthy and his Dallas Cowboys put on one of the worst performances in recent memory. The Cowboys gave up 48 points and were down 27-0 to Green Bay early in the first half. The performance has led many to believe that owner Jerry Jones will let McCarthy go and search for yet another head coach. A McCarthy exit would add another coach to the NFL coaching carousel.
A similar situation could be brewing in Pittsburgh where the Steelers went 10-7 this season but lost to Buffalo yesterday, 31-17, in the wild card playoffs. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about his future with the team in a post-game press conference. He immediately got up and left. It’s worth mentioning that Tomlin has never had a losing season in Pittsburgh. Could he too become a victim of the NFL coaching carousel?
Harbaugh Adds Drama to NFL Coaching Carousel
While the Bills were beating the Steelers and the Bucs were taking care of business against the Eagles, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was in Los Angeles where he interviewed for the Chargers head coaching vacancy. Harbaugh is fresh off a national championship season in Michigan. If he were to leave the Wolverines, the NFL coaching carousel would spread to the college level.
As it stands right now, Atlanta, Seattle, Washington, Tennessee, the Chargers, Las Vegas, and Carolina all have a vacant head coaching spot. That’s seven different franchises. That number could go to eight, nine, maybe even 10! It will be interesting to see if Dallas joins the NFL coaching carousel and makes a change. McCarthy is 42-25 with three straight 12-5 seasons, three straight playoff berths, and three straight playoff exits.
There was another head coach that interviewed for one of these open jobs. We’ll talk more about him in our trending news section. Don’t forget, the New England Patriots have already filled their vacancy. Former player and current assistant Jerod Mayo is the latest member of the NFL coaching carousel and the new head coach of the Patriots.

Playoff Results Could Affect NFL Coaching Carousel
Yesterday completed the wild card playoff round in the NFL. Buffalo handled Pittsburgh 31-17 and Tampa Bay pulled a huge upset over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bucs won 32-9. The loss in Pittsburgh and coach Tomlin’s abrupt departure from the post-game press conference lead many to believe that he’ll become part of the NFL coaching carousel.
The NFL coaching carousel has been in the news recently and will continue throughout the playoff season. Yesterday, there was some big news in relation to the NFL coaching carousel. That is among our trending news for today.
Let’s check it out.
- Harbaugh in LA: Jim Harbaugh was interviewed yesterday by the Los Angeles Chargers. For those that don’t know, Harbaugh’s first head coaching job was at the University of San Diego. He has some ties to the Chargers and to southern California.
- Belichick in Atlanta: Harbaugh wasn’t the only one riding the NFL coaching carousel yesterday. The legend, Bill Belichick, was interviewed by the Atlanta Falcons yesterday. Belichick, who is 71, has been an NFL head coach for 29 years. The Falcons haven’t had a winning season or made the playoffs in the last six seasons.
- Jason Kelce: The other Kelce brother has announced his retirement after 13 NFL seasons. Kelce was a 7-time Pro Bowler and 6-time All-Pro.
