Ovechkin Inches Closer to Gretzky’s Record as Capitals Dominate Sharks

Alex Ovechkin scored his 887th career goal, moving seven goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL record, as the Washington Capitals rolled past the San Jose Sharks 5-1.

Ovechkin deflected a point shot for a third-period goal and added an assist in the Eastern Conference-leading Capitals’ strong start. Dylan Strome, Aliaksei Protas, Taylor Raddysh, and Trevor van Riemsdyk also found the net.

Tom Wilson, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Lars Eller each recorded two assists, while goalie Macklin Celebrini made 24 saves to secure the win.

San Jose’s only goal came from Macklin Celebrini, as the Sharks remain at the bottom of the league standings with just one win in their last five games.


Lightning Dominate Bruins With Explosive Second Period

Anthony Cirelli scored twice, including the game-winner, as the Tampa Bay Lightning routed the Boston Bruins 6-2.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period, but Tampa Bay took complete control with three unanswered goals and held a staggering 21-0 shot advantage in the second period.

Darren Raddysh and Nick Paul each had a goal and an assist, while Victor Hedman and Brandon Hagel also scored to snap Tampa’s three-game skid.

Claude Giroux’s second-period goal proved to be the game-winner as the Ottawa Senators extended their win streak to six with a 4-2 victory over Toronto.

Mark Jankowski scored twice, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-0 shutout win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Carolina has now held seven straight opponents to two goals or fewer, with Pyotr Kochetkov making 26 saves for his second shutout of the season.

Quinton Byfield scored in overtime for the sixth straight game, lifting the Los Angeles Kings to a 1-0 win over the Nashville Predators.

Justus Annunen made 20 saves for Nashville, which dropped its second straight game after a four-game winning streak.

Cole Caufield recorded a goal and an assist, while Christian Dvorak netted his 100th career goal, as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Florida Panthers 3-1.

Patrik Laine also scored on the power play for Montreal, which is 7-1-2 in its last 10 games and has won four straight at home.

Mackie Samoskevich scored Florida’s lone goal as the Panthers, despite leading the Atlantic Division, have now lost two of their last three games.

Rangers Shut Out Blue Jackets in Wild Card Battle

Vincent Trocheck scored twice in the third period, helping the New York Rangers secure a 4-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Alexis Lafreniere and Artemi Panarin each recorded a goal and an assist, while Igor Shesterkin posted his fifth shutout of the season, stopping 21 shots.

Columbus has now lost three straight games, including back-to-back shutouts, since their 7-3 win over the Rangers last week.

Jack Quinn and Alex Tuch scored in the shootout, giving the Buffalo Sabres a 4-3 comeback win over the Vegas Golden Knights.

New Jersey, which had won three straight, struggled defensively, giving up seven goals. Jesper Bratt had three assists, but it wasn’t enough as the Devils’ win streak was snapped.
