Capitals 5, Golden Knights 2

Alex Ovechkin delivered a vintage performance with his 31st career hat trick, leading Washington to a statement win over Vegas in Las Vegas.

Ovechkin inched closer to NHL history, now just 29 goals shy of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 goals. His tally of 864, 865, and 866 goals also marked the 176th multi-goal game of his career, leaving him 13 shy of Gretzky’s record. With this feat, Ovechkin moved into a tie for the NHL lead in goals (13) alongside Sam Reinhart and Leon Draisaitl.

Logan Thompson was stellar in net for Washington, making 40 saves as the Capitals improved to 6-0-0 against Western Conference teams and earned their first regular-season win at T-Mobile Arena. Jakob Chychrun and Jakub Vrana also scored for the Capitals, while Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas chipped in two assists apiece.

For Vegas, Brett Howden and Keegan Kolesar found the back of the net, while Ilya Samsonov made 20 saves. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Golden Knights.
