NHL roundup: Flames honor Gaudreaus in win over Jackets

Dan Vladar made 16 saves for his second shutout of the season as Calgary snapped a four-game skid with a win over visiting Columbus.

The Flames paid tribute to the late Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, honoring their memory with Vladar wearing a customized mask featuring their images. Goals by Rasmus Andersson, Kevin Bahl, and Yegor Sharangovich provided the offense for Calgary, while Mikael Backlund tallied two assists.

Elvis Merzlikins stopped 19 shots for Columbus, which suffered its first regulation loss in seven games (5-1-1).

Avalanche 5, Sabres 4

Nathan MacKinnon scored twice as Colorado rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Buffalo in a thrilling road contest.

Joel Kiviranta, Logan O’Connor, and Artturi Lehkonen also scored for the Avalanche, who got a stellar relief performance from Scott Wedgewood (22 saves).

Buffalo’s Tage Thompson scored twice, while JJ Peterka and Beck Malenstyn also found the back of the net. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen turned aside 36 shots in the loss.


Penguins 5, Panthers 4 (OT)

Bryan Rust scored 91 seconds into overtime as Pittsburgh held off Florida after squandering a three-goal lead in the third period.

Evgeni Malkin, Marcus Pettersson, Owen Pickering, and Kris Letang also scored for the Penguins. Tristan Jarry posted a season-high 37 saves.

Matthew Tkachuk recorded four points (two goals, two assists) for Florida, surpassing 600 career points. Sam Bennett extended his goal streak to four games, while Spencer Knight made 11 saves for the Panthers.


Bruins 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)

Pavel Zacha scored the game-winner in overtime as Boston edged Detroit at TD Garden.

Nikita Zadorov and Justin Brazeau also scored for the Bruins, with Joonas Korpisalo making 25 saves. Brazeau’s power-play goal tied the game in the third period.

Lucas Raymond scored both goals for the Red Wings, extending his career-best eight-game point streak. Ville Husso made 32 saves in the loss.


Wild 3, Canucks 2 (OT)

Kirill Kaprizov buried the game-winner in the final minute of overtime as Minnesota defeated visiting Vancouver.

Frederick Gaudreau and Jake Middleton also scored for the Wild, who extended their winning streak to four games. Filip Gustavsson stopped 30 of 32 shots.

Quinn Hughes and Jake DeBrusk scored for Vancouver, which saw its three-game overtime win streak come to an end. Kevin Lankinen made 26 saves.


Canadiens 2, Islanders 1 (OT)

Nick Suzuki scored in overtime and added an assist as Montreal topped visiting New York.

Patrik Laine, playing his first game of the season following knee surgery, scored Montreal’s other goal. Sam Montembeault made 30 saves for the Canadiens, who improved to 2-3-1 in their past six games.

Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, who dropped to 3-9-2 in their past 14 contests. Ilya Sorokin recorded 25 saves.


Sharks 2, Capitals 1 (OT)

William Eklund’s power-play goal 39 seconds into overtime lifted San Jose over host Washington.

Tyler Toffoli scored for the Sharks, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves. Rookie Macklin Celebrini extended his point streak to five games with an assist on Eklund’s winner.

Nic Dowd scored Washington’s lone goal, while Logan Thompson stopped 29 shots in defeat.


Golden Knights 1, Oilers 0

Adin Hill made 28 saves for his second shutout of the season as Vegas edged Edmonton in a defensive battle.

Ivan Barbashev scored his fifth goal in six games to provide the game’s only offense. The Golden Knights snapped the Oilers’ three-game winning streak.

Stuart Skinner made 15 saves for Edmonton, which was blanked for the fourth time this season.


Kraken 4, Hurricanes 2

Jaden Schwartz and Yanni Gourde each had a goal and an assist as Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak with a win in Raleigh, N.C.

Eeli Tolvanen and Brandon Tanev also scored for the Kraken, while Joey Daccord made 17 saves.

Martin Necas and Eric Robinson scored for the Hurricanes, who dropped their third straight. Pyotr Kochetkov returned from injury to stop 24 of 28 shots.

Blues 4, Jets 1

Jordan Kyrou scored twice to lead St. Louis past Winnipeg, handing the Jets their fourth straight loss.

Dylan Holloway and Robert Thomas each tallied a goal and an assist for the Blues, who improved to 3-0-1 under new coach Jim Montgomery. Joel Hofer made 22 saves.

Mark Scheifele scored Winnipeg’s lone goal, while Connor Hellebuyck stopped 28 shots for the Jets, who are now 3-7-0 in their past 10 games.
