NHL roundup: John Tavares’ hat trick carries Leafs over Sabres

Maple Leafs 5, Sabres 3

John Tavares scored three consecutive goals for his 14th career hat trick as the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied past the Buffalo Sabres. Tavares’ second-period surge flipped a 3-2 deficit into a commanding victory, capped by an empty-netter late in the third period.

Max Domi and Nicholas Robertson contributed a goal and an assist each, while Dennis Hildeby stopped 24 shots in his third career NHL start for Toronto.

Jack Quinn scored twice for Buffalo, and Alex Tuch added another goal, but the Sabres extended their winless streak to 10 games (0-7-3).

Golden Knights 3, Wild 2

Victor Olofsson netted two goals, including the game-winner in the third period, as the Vegas Golden Knights edged the Minnesota Wild. Shea Theodore added a goal and an assist, and goaltender Ilya Samsonov made 20 saves to earn the win.

Kirill Kaprizov scored both goals for the Wild, who have lost three of their last five games. Jesper Wallstedt, making his season debut for Minnesota, turned aside 24 shots in a solid performance.

Blackhawks 5, Islanders 3

Connor Bedard scored the go-ahead goal with 54 seconds remaining as the Chicago Blackhawks stunned the New York Islanders. Teuvo Teravainen added a goal and two assists, while Alex Vlasic recorded two assists for Chicago, which scored twice in the final minute to secure the victory.

Bedard’s late tally came just after an Islanders power play failed, with heavy traffic in front of Ilya Sorokin, who made 27 saves. Chicago avenged a 5-4 loss to the Islanders last Thursday.

Joel Hofer made 26 saves for his fourth consecutive win in goal. Will Cuylle and Brett Berard scored for the Rangers, who have lost 10 of their last 13 games.
