On August 1, the Texas Rangers went on a run where they won eight straight games. They were in good shape in the AL West race and were a definite playoff team. A week later, the wheels almost fell off the bus. The Rangers lost 16 of 20 games from Aug. 16 to Sept. 8. They dropped out of first place in the division and it appeared they might fall out of the playoff race.
Then, the Rangers put together another streak – 12 out of 16 – before finishing the season winning just two of their last six games. Texas ended up with the exact same record as Houston – 90-72 – though the Astros won the season series and the division title. The Rangers wound up as the No. 5 seed and swept the Tampa Bay Rays and the No. 1 seed, Baltimore. With wins in the first two games of the ALCS, the Rangers have yet to lose a postseason game. Will that continue? Will our MLB expert picks continue?
Rangers, Phillies Among Top Picks
The Rangers and Phillies were always among MLB teams considered to be contenders for this year’s World Series title. They weren’t the Dodgers, Braves, or Orioles though. Atlanta finished the regular season with the best record in baseball. The Phillies took care of the Braves in four games. The Rangers swept Baltimore, which had the best record in the American League during the regular season.
Now, the Rangers and Phillies appear to be on a path to meet in the World Series. Texas will have the opportunity to sweep defending champion Houston. The Rangers will play the next two games at home at Globe Life Field. They haven’t lost a postseason game yet. The Rangers are hitting .262 in the playoffs and their pitching has been stellar. As a team, the Rangers have a 2.14 ERA in the playoffs.
Sports Hub handicappers are doing well with the MLB postseason too. Mike Kelly is 23-13 (63.89%) over the last 30 days and is up $741 with his baseball picks. Our Sports Hub experts Ben Miller (22-16) and James Acker (19-12) are up $502 and $457, respectively, with their postseason MLB picks. More Dingers, Rangers Top Trending News
The Philadelphia Phillies hit three more home runs last night in their 10-0 victory over Arizona. Kyle Schwarber had two solo shots to give the Phillies 19 dingers in the postseason. Like the Rangers, Philadelphia is up 2-0 in the NLCS. Game 3 is Thursday night in Arizona. Baseball isn’t the only thing trending in the sports world. There’s more.
Here’s what to keep an eye on.
- Dinger Derby: As mentioned, the Phillies hit three more homers last night. That gives Philadelphia 15 dingers in their last four games. The two that Schwarber hit last night gives him a career total of 18 home runs in the postseason. That ties Reggie Jackson as the most by a left-handed batter.
- Rangers: Texas is up 2-0 on rival Houston and Game 3 is tonight at Globe Life Field. The Rangers have yet to lose a postseason game. Max Scherzer (13-6, 3.77) pitches for the first time since Sept. 12. Interestingly, Scherzer pitched against Houston on Sept. 6. He allowed six hits and seven earned runs in just three innings. The Astros won that game 12-3.

- Penn State-Ohio State: The seventh-ranked Nittany Lions go on the road to face No. 3 Ohio State this Saturday. The matchup pits two of the top defenses in the country. Penn State is second in scoring defense (8.2 ppg); Ohio State is third (10.2). Both teams have pretty explosive offenses too. Penn State ranks No. 7 in scoring (40.6 ppg) while Ohio State is 12th (36.2).
- Uruguay: It’s been over two decades since Uruguay beat Brazil in a soccer match. Yesterday, Uruguay beat the Brazilians 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying match. The winners will face Argentina next month in another qualifying match.
- Julio Jones: The Philadelphia Eagles found themselves short on quality receivers after they placed Quez Watkins on injured reserve. They worked out a couple guys and ultimately decided on the 34-year-old Jones. This will be Jones fourth team in four years. His 13,629 receiving yards are the most of any active NFL wide receiver.
Rangers-Astros Game 3 Tops Schedule
Game 3 of the ALCS leads the sports schedule today. It’s not the only game in town though. There’s quite a bit to choose from if you’re a sports bettor or just a fan looking for something to watch.
Here’s what’s on tap today.
- Midweek college football: Conference USA gives us two more games tonight. FIU takes on winless Sam Houston, one of two new members to the FBS. New Mexico State is at UTEP in the other game.
- Will Aces end it?: Leading 2-1 in the WNBA Finals, the Las Vegas Aces will be without two starters tonight in Game 4. The Liberty won Game 3 at home on Sunday and will try to take another to force a deciding Game 5 back in Vegas.
Breaking: Las Vegas Aces Kiah Stokes and Chelsea Gray will be out for Game 4 of the WNBA Finals, head coach Becky Hammon announced.

- NBA: Four preseason games are on tap for tonight in the NBA. The biggest news of the preseason is Spurs rookie Victor Wembenyana, who was the first pick in this year’s draft. He scored 20 points in his preseason debut and 23 in the next game. He sat out Monday’s game against the Rockets, but is set to play tonight against Houston.
- Soccer: If you’re a South American soccer fan or bettor, you’re in luck. Other than that, there’s not much soccer today. Inter Miami plays Charlotte in a lone MLS match and there are a handful of NCAA men’s matches.
- Tennis: The top four seeds play second-round matches today. The BNP Paribas Nordic Open in Sweden and the European Open also continue. On the WTA tour, the Jiangxi Open, Transylvania Open, Jasmin Open Monastir, and the Aguascalientes Open all continue today.
That’s all for today. It will be interesting to see if the Rangers can pull off another win. They are the favorite tonight. Our picks for the game are starting to roll in.
