McGeary’s Homer Lifts Cubs Past Braves in Finale

Haydn McGeary crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to break a tie and power the Chicago Cubs to a 4-2 win over the Atlanta Braves in their spring training finale in Mesa, Arizona. Carter Trice, who had two hits, singled just before McGeary’s blast. Earlier, he tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Dansby Swanson went 2-for-2 with an RBI double, and Cubs starter Ben Brown struck out four across 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Samuel Armstrong (1-0) was dominant in relief, striking out six over four shutout innings.

Bryan De La Cruz provided all the offense for Atlanta with a two-run homer in the third. Shay Schanaman (0-1) gave up the deciding home run to take the loss.

Fedko, Morales Push Twins Over Rockies

Kyler Fedko and Jeferson Morales hit consecutive RBI singles to snap a 3-3 tie as Minnesota defeated Colorado 5-3 in Fort Myers. Trevor Larnach launched a two-run home run earlier in the game, and Chris Paddack struck out five over 3 1/3 innings in his start.

Hunter Goodman belted a two-run shot for the Rockies. German Marquez allowed three runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Matt Mervis and Graham Pauley each homered to lift the Miami Marlins to a 4-2 exhibition win over the New York Yankees at loanDepot park. Max Meyer (1-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in five innings, and four Marlins relievers closed it out with a hitless inning each.

Cody Bellinger hit a solo homer in the first and later scored on a throwing error for the Yankees’ only runs. Will Warren (4-1) gave up four runs in 3 2/3 innings despite striking out six.

Perez Powers Royals Over Rangers

Salvador Perez went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth, as Kansas City beat Texas 3-1 in Arlington. Michael Massey scored twice and also had two hits.

Kris Bubic (2-1) struck out eight over five innings and allowed just one run on five hits. Rangers starter Jacob deGrom (1-2) gave up all three runs across four innings, including Perez’s long ball.

Jonah Heim drove in the lone Texas run with a double.

Wilson’s Ninth-Inning Double Sends Guardians Past D-backs

Will Wilson drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the ninth to lift Cleveland to a 3-2 win over Arizona in Phoenix. Kyle Manzardo added a solo homer for the Guardians, and Luis Ortiz gave up two runs over four innings. Cleveland’s bullpen was perfect over the final five frames.

Josh Naylor drove in a run for Arizona, while Brandon Bielak allowed two runs over 3 2/3 innings in the start.
