Spring training roundup: O’s use 8-run ninth to shock Twins

Orioles 13, Twins 10

Baltimore exploded for eight runs in the ninth to overturn a five-run deficit at Minnesota’s spring facility in Fort Myers, Fla. Vimael Machin and Maverick Handley started the rally, Jeremiah Jackson and Dylan Beavers went back-to-back for a pair of home runs, and Jud Fabian’s two-run double tied the game. Jackson Holliday was 2-for-3 and homered for the Orioles, who overcame being out-hit 17-14. Trevor Larnach (three RBIs) went deep for the Twins. John Stankiewicz (0-1) took the loss, charged with six of the Orioles’ eighth-inning runs.


Phillies 7, Red Sox 5

Matt Kroon and Carson DeMartini each homered in the seventh inning to put the Phillies ahead, and Carson Taylor’s two-run blast in the eighth secured the home win in Clearwater, Fla. Bryce Harper added two hits, while Jean Cabrera (1-0) struck out four over two scoreless relief innings. Abraham Toro’s two-run single helped Boston build an early lead. Robert Stock (0-1) yielded four runs in two innings.

Astros 3, Cardinals 2

Isaac Paredes – playing his first spring with Houston – cranked a solo homer and added an RBI single, leading the host Astros over St. Louis in West Palm Beach, Fla. Shay Whitcomb also homered, and Hunter Brown (1-0) pitched two shutout innings. Michael Helman’s sacrifice fly in the eighth and Bryan Torres’ ninth-inning groundout accounted for the Cardinals’ runs. Erick Fedde (0-1) was tagged with the loss.


Pirates 3, Rays 2

Bryan Reynolds went 2-for-3, scoring what turned out to be the decisive run on a throwing error in the fifth. Isiah Kiner-Falefa drove in a run with a double, as Pittsburgh edged visiting Tampa Bay in Bradenton, Fla. Mitch Keller (1-0) started and produced three scoreless innings with two hits allowed. Tres Barrera’s two-run single in the fifth gave the Rays some hope, but they fell short.


Blue Jays (ss) 10, Tigers 7

George Springer’s two-run double capped an eight-run fourth for Toronto’s split squad en route to a home victory in Dunedin, Fla. Daulton Varsho and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went back-to-back with solo shots in the first, then added RBIs during the decisive fourth. Detroit trimmed a 10-2 lead down to three with rallies in the sixth and seventh, but Chase Lee (0-1) took the loss by giving up four runs (three hits, one walk) in just one-third of an inning.


Braves 7, Marlins 2

Drake Baldwin went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, helping Atlanta top Miami in Jupiter, Fla. Ian Anderson (1-1) worked three hitless innings with two walks. Nick Allen and Will Verdung also chipped in two hits apiece for the Braves. Jack Winkler launched a solo homer in the eighth and Nathan Martorella doubled in another run in the ninth for the Marlins. Sandy Alcantara struck out three in two clean frames.


Mets 7, Nationals 0

Juan Soto belted his second homer of the spring, and Francisco Lindor went 2-for-4 with two runs scored as host New York blanked Washington in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Luis Torrens drove in two with a first-inning single, sparking a four-run start for the Mets, who posted back-to-back shutouts. Brandon Sproat (1-0) threw two perfect innings to get the win. Washington managed just five singles.


Cubs 8, Rangers 8

Jordan Nwogu’s game-tying RBI single in the ninth prevented Texas from closing out a victory in Surprise, Ariz. Haydn McGeary hit a three-run shot for Chicago, while Moises Ballesteros scored on a throwing error ahead of Nwogu’s single. Rangers newcomer Kyle Higashioka drove in six runs on a pair of homers and a sac fly. Starter Cody Bradford tossed three innings of three-hit ball with three strikeouts.


Athletics 13, Reds 1

Zack Gelof, Lawrence Butler (three-run blast), and Miguel Andujar each homered, propelling host Oakland to a big win over Cincinnati in Mesa, Ariz. Butler finished with four RBIs; Andujar went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Jacob Wilson was 3-for-3 and drove in three more for Oakland. The Reds’ lone run came off Blake Dunn’s RBI single in the second. Hunter Greene (0-1) gave up five runs in two innings.


Guardians 3, Rockies 1

Milan Tolentino stroked a tie-breaking two-run single in the eighth, and Cleveland held on to beat visiting Colorado in Goodyear, Ariz. Tolentino and Johnathan Rodriguez went 2-for-2 each. Sean Bouchard launched a solo homer for the Rockies. Justin Lawrence (0-1) allowed two walks and a single in the eighth to set up Tolentino’s go-ahead hit.


Giants 9, Brewers 2

Matt Chapman, Wilmer Flores, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski homered, fueling San Francisco’s victory over visiting Milwaukee in Scottsdale, Ariz. Wade went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Logan Webb (1-0) allowed a run on three hits in three innings. Caleb Durbin’s solo blast provided a highlight for the Brewers.

Angels (ss) 3, White Sox 2

Jorge Soler starred for Los Angeles’ split squad in Tempe, Ariz., going 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double and a solo homer. Mickey Moniak’s RBI double plated another early run, while Reid Detmers (1-1) threw three scoreless innings with a hit and two walks. Brooks Baldwin and Cal Mitchell each knocked in a run for Chicago.


Diamondbacks 6, Royals 1

Gino Groover and Corbin Carroll homered in the fifth — Carroll’s a two-run shot — sparking host Arizona past Kansas City in Scottsdale, Ariz. Carroll went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Ryne Nelson (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings. MJ Melendez’s sixth-inning blast was the Royals’ only offense.
