Spring training roundup: Yankees, Red Sox unleash bats in big wins

Yankees 12, Phillies 3

Spencer Jones went 3-for-3 with four RBIs — including a three-run homer in a seven-run third inning — as visiting New York rolled over Philadelphia in Clearwater, Fla. Jones also doubled in the second inning, following an RBI single by George Lombard Jr. Paul Goldschmidt punctuated the big third with a two-run homer, and Jasson Dominguez also went deep.
Yankees starter Will Warren (2-0) fanned four, allowing one run on one hit and a walk in three innings. Phillies starter Zack Wheeler (0-1) was tagged for six runs (five earned) on eight hits over two-plus frames, and Max Kepler launched a solo shot for Philadelphia.


Red Sox 12, Pirates 4

Nate Eaton smacked a grand slam in the fifth inning, and Boston cruised at Pittsburgh’s spring home in Bradenton, Fla. Abraham Toro provided a three-run triple and Trayce Thompson belted a two-run homer to help build a 6-0 lead. Nick Sogard finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Red Sox starter Quinn Priester (1-0) yielded one run on four hits with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Ji Hwan Bae went 3-for-3 with a homer for Pittsburgh. Andrew Heaney (0-1) allowed four runs on two hits and three walks in 1 2/3 frames.


Rays 4, Tigers 1

Matthew Etzel notched a two-run double to put Tampa Bay ahead in the fifth, then added a solo homer in the seventh to help host Tampa Bay top Detroit in Port Charlotte. Eloy Jimenez contributed a solo homer for the Rays. Alex Faedo (1-1) pitched a clean fifth for the win, while Dietrich Enns (0-1) yielded Etzel’s go-ahead double. Ryan Kreidler had a sac fly for Detroit’s only run.

Twins 0, Braves 0 (Tie)

Chris Sale worked four no-hit innings with four strikeouts and one walk, highlighting a scoreless duel in North Port, Fla. Atlanta’s bullpen allowed four hits the rest of the way. Austin Riley collected two hits for the Braves, and Garrett Cooper’s double marked the only extra-base hit. Twins starter Randy Dobnak struck out five across three innings (three hits, two walks), and Jose Miranda recorded two of Minnesota’s four hits.


Cardinals (ss) 6, Mets 1

Matt Koperniak drilled a two-run shot, and Nolan Arenado doubled in two more runs in Jupiter, Fla., pacing St. Louis. Starter Andre Pallante (1-0) fanned two over three innings of one-hit ball. The Mets mustered just five hits, scoring their lone run on a fielding error in the eighth. Tylor Megill (0-1) yielded one run in 2 2/3 frames.


Cardinals 6, Nationals 4

Yordalin Pena’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth propelled St. Louis past Washington in West Palm Beach. Thomas Saggese launched a solo homer and Lars Nootbaar delivered a two-run single to help the Cardinals build a 4-0 lead. The Nationals rallied to tie with two-run hits by Alex Call (double) and Amed Rosario (single). Maxwell Rajcic (1-0) navigated two final innings despite three walks and a hit, earning the win. Andry Lara (0-1) surrendered Pena’s decisive blast.
