If you’re looking for the best 2024 Australian Open 2nd round picks, you’ve certainly come to the right place.
The first tennis major of the year is in full swing Down Under. Lucky for you, the SportsHub tennis experts will be serving up picks and predictions throughout the duration of the tournament.
Before I reveal my Australian Open 2nd round picks, let’s recap all the key talking points from round one. The tournament may have only started on Sunday, but there is already plenty to discuss.
What’s Happened So Far in Melbourne?
Some notable names were eliminated from the tournament during round one, including seeded players in both the men’s and women’s singles events.
Remarkably, no fewer than 10 of the 32 women’s singles seeds have already been knocked out. Marketa Vondrousova (#7) is among the highest-profile departed players, along with Liudmila Samsonova (#13) and Veronika Kudermetova (#15).
In the men’s singles event, Nicolas Jarry (#18) suffered a shock defeat to unseeded Italian Flavio Cobolli. Andy Murray also fell at the first hurdle, losing in straight sets against Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Best 2024 Australian Open 2nd Round Picks
Round two is scheduled to take place between Wednesday, January 17 and Thursday, January 18. Across those two days, many of the biggest names in tennis will battle it out for a place in the next round.
Novak Djokovic (#1) has a favorable match against Alexei Popyrin to look forward to, while Daniil Medvedev (#3) faces Emil Ruusuvuori. In the women’s singles event, Aryna Sabalenka (#2) takes on 16-year-old qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova.
My Australian Open 2nd round picks cover both the men’s and women’s singles events. Let’s get this show on the road!
Frances Tiafoe vs. Tomas Machac Prediction
Odds: Frances Tiafoe (-223) / Tomas Machac (+175)
Frances Tiafoe came through a tricky match against Borna Coric in round one, winning the contest after four sets. That said, the American dominated the three sets that he won, dropping only eight games in the process.
Meanwhile, Tomas Machac triumphed in straight sets against Shintaro Mochizuki last time out. After winning 7-5, 6-1, 7-5 against his Japanese opponent, the up-and-coming Czech player will be confident of reaching round three.
Still, I’m backing Tiafoe to defeat Machac. Having reached the quarterfinals of the US Open last season, Tiafoe knows what it takes to reach the latter stages of a major tournament. It’s fair to say that Machac doesn’t have the same experience.
Best Bet: Frances Tiafoe (-223)
Taylor Fritz vs. Hugo Gaston Prediction
Odds: Taylor Fritz (-1000) / Hugo Gaston (+600)
As the #12 seed, Taylor Fritz was expected to make light work of Facundo Diaz Acosta in round one. However, the American ended up dropping two sets against the Argentine before eventually sealing the deal in five sets.
Hugo Gaston, on the other hand, was forced to come through several qualifying rounds to reach the tournament proper. In round one, the Frenchman overcame Roberto Carballes Baena to punch his ticket to round two.
Fritz may have reached two major quarterfinals since 2022, but the 26-year-old has struggled for consistency in recent weeks. Consequently, Gaston’s big price of +600 is bound to attract plenty of attention.

Tamara Korpatsch vs. Barbora Krejcikova Prediction
Odds: Tamara Korpatsch (+375) / Barbora Krejcikova (-550)
The last of my Australian Open 2nd round picks concerns the women’s singles clash between Tamara Korpatsch and Barbora Krejcikova. While Krejcikova is the bookies’ favorite, Korpatsch will fancy her chances of upsetting the odds.
Korpatsch cruised into round two with a comfortable victory over Jodie Anna Burrage, winning the final two sets 6-3, 6-0. Meanwhile, Krejcikova booked her place in round two with a slightly more testing win against Mai Hontama.
That said, Krejcikova is the #9 seed for a reason. The 28-year-old Czech player won the French Open back in 2021 and has also reached two major quarterfinals over the years.
