Brandon Newman led the Cowboys (8-4, 0-1) with 12 points, but leading scorer Marchelus Avery managed just five points on 2-for-8 shooting.


No. 17 Mississippi State Overpowers Bethune-Cookman

Riley Kugel came off the bench to score 22 points, and Josh Hubbard added 16 as Mississippi State surged in the second half to defeat Bethune-Cookman 87-73 in Starkville. The Bulldogs (12-1) limited the Wildcats to 28 second-half points after allowing 45 in the first half.

Trey Thomas and Brayon Freeman scored 21 points each for Bethune-Cookman (3-10).


No. 18 Michigan State Defeats Western Michigan

Jaden Akins scored 18 points to lead Michigan State to an 80-62 win over Western Michigan in East Lansing. The Spartans (11-2) controlled the game with their superior depth, outscoring the Broncos 20-7 at the foul line.

Chansey Willis Jr. led Western Michigan (3-9) with 12 points as the Broncos dropped their fifth straight.


No. 19 Gonzaga Holds Off Pepperdine’s Rally

Khalif Battle scored 21 points, and Braden Huff added 19 as No. 19 Gonzaga overcame a furious second-half comeback by Pepperdine to secure an 89-82 road win. The Bulldogs (10-4, 1-0 WCC) earned their 29th straight West Coast Conference opener victory.

Jaxon Olvera scored a game-high 27 points for the Waves (6-9, 0-2), who outscored Gonzaga 50-39 in the second half but couldn’t complete the comeback.

No. 23 Arkansas Routs Oakland

Adou Thiero scored 20 points, and Boogie Fland led all scorers with 24 as Arkansas cruised to a 92-62 victory over Oakland in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks (11-2) shot an impressive 60.3 percent from the field in a dominant showing.

Tuburu Naivalurua had 18 points and nine rebounds for Oakland (4-10), which has now lost six of its last seven games.
