The 2024 NHL Vezina Trophy odds were released in June 2023. We haven’t seen much line movement, which is typical during the NHL offseason, but that will change if any goalies are traded.

Connor Hellebuyck has featured in trade rumors this summer. He’s a pending unrestricted free agent and the Jets may trade him rather than risk losing the goaltender for nothing next offseason. Linus Ullmark is fresh off winning the 2023 Vezina Trophy, but Boston may trade him to open up additional cap space.

What Is the Vezina Trophy in Hockey?

The Vezina Trophy is an annual award for the best goaltender in the NHL during the regular season.

Initially, the Vezina Trophy was awarded to the goalie(s) with the lowest goals against average (GAA) in the regular season. Now, the NHL’s 32 general managers vote to determine the winner. GMs rank their top three candidates using a 5-3-1 points system. After the vote, the three Vezina Trophy finalists are announced and the winner is announced at the annual NHL Awards ceremony.

2024 Vezina Trophy Odds – Favorites

Here are the 2024 Vezina Trophy odds leaders (priced below +1000):

  • Ilya Sorokin (Islanders) +400
  • Juuse Saros (Predators) +600
  • Igor Shesterkin (Rangers) +600
  • Connor Hellebuyck (Jets) +700
  • Andrei Vasilevskiy (Lightning) +800

Sorokin and Saros are both looking to win their first Vezina Trophy in 2024. Shesterkin (2022), Hellebuyck (2020) and Vasilevskiy (2019) have all won the Vezina Trophy award once in their careers.

Sorokin was the runner-up last season after going 31-22-0-7 with a 2.33 GAA (5th) and .924 SV% (3rd). He also ranked third in goals saved above expected (GSAx) at 38.7 and first in shutouts (6). Saros ranked fourth in Vezina Trophy voting last season. He went 33-23-0-7 and ranked first in GSAx (46.7).

Hellebuyck was third in Vezina Trophy voting last season. He went 37-25-0-2 with a .920 SV% (T4) and 30.8 GSAx (4th). If he’s traded to a contender this offseason, his Vezina Trophy odds will shorten.

2024 Vezina Trophy Odds – Contenders

Here are the next eight goalies in the 2024 Vezina Trophy odds (priced at +3000 or below):

  • Jake Oettinger (Stars) +1200
  • Linus Ullmark (Bruins) +1800
  • Filip Gustavsson (Wild) +2000
  • Alexander Georgiev (Avalanche) +2500
  • Thatcher Demko (Canucks) +3000
  • Jacob Markstrom (Flames) +3000
  • Jeremy Swayman (Bruins) +3000
  • Carter Hart (Flyers) +3000

Will the top NHL goalie in 2024 emerge from this contenders list? It wouldn’t be a surprise. Ullmark isn’t getting much respect. Ullmark went 40-6-0-1 with a 1.89 GAA (1st), .938 SV% (1st) and 42.4 GSAx (2nd) last season. A goalie hasn’t won back-to-back Vezina Trophy awards since Martin Brodeur (2007/2008).

Oettinger keeps improving and at just 24 years old, he’ll be a contender for years. Oettinger ended the regular season with a 37-11-0-11 record, 2.35 GAA (7th), .920 SV% (T4) and 5 shutouts (T2).

Gustavsson would have shorter Vezina Trophy odds if he wasn’t sharing the net with Marc-Andre Fleury again this season. Gustavsson went 22-9-0-7 last season with a 2.10 GAA (2nd), .931 SV% (2nd) and 24.2 GSAx (7th). Georgiev is also a contender to be the top NHL goalie in 2024. He went 40-16-0-6 with five shutouts (T2), 2.51 GAA (14th), .919 SV% (7th) and 21.9 GSAx (9th).

If Ullmark is traded, Swayman would become a top contender in the Vezina Trophy odds.

2024 Vezina Trophy Odds – Longshots

Here are the next 15 goalies in the 2024 Vezina Trophy odds (priced below +10000):

  • Pyotr Kochetkov (Hurricanes) +4000
  • Sergei Bobrovsky (Panthers) +4000
  • Frederik Andersen (Hurricanes) +4000
  • Tristan Jarry (Penguins) +5000
  • Philipp Grubauer (Kraken) +5000
  • Logan Thompson (Golden Knights) +5000
  • Karel Vejmelka (Coyotes) +5000
  • John Gibson (Ducks) +5000
  • Devon Levi (Sabres) +5000
  • Darcy Kuemper (Capitals) +5000
  • Akira Schmid (Devils) +5000
  • Ville Husso (Red Wings) +7500
  • Jordan Binnington (Blues) +7500
  • Ilya Samsonov (Maple Leafs) +7500
  • Adin Hill (Golden Knights) +8000

You might think none of these ice hockey goalies stand a chance at winning the 2024 Vezina Trophy, but that’s not the case. Last season, Ullmark was priced at +8000 to win the Vezina during the offseason.

The Vezina Trophy is often regarded as the toughest NHL award to predict.

Carolina aren’t ready to hand the net over to Kochetkov yet. They re-signed Andersen and Antti Ranta in the offseason. Kochetkov went 15-7-0-5 with a 2.44 GAA (8th) and .909 SV% (21st) last season.

Bobrovsky went 24-20-0-3 with a 3.07 GAA (38th) and .901 SV% (T35), but he improved those numbers in the NHL playoffs (12-6 with a 2.78 GAA and .915 SV%) and could contend this season.

Two other 2024 Vezina Trophy NHL odds longshots to consider are Samsonov and Hill.

Samsonov went 27-10-0-5 with a 2.33 GAA (T5), .919 SV% (T7) and 18.0 GSAx (10th) last season and he’s back with the Maple Leafs. Hill went 16-7-0-1 with a 2.46 GAA (10th) and .915 SV% (T11) in the regular season and then caught fire in the NHL playoffs (11-4 with a 2.17 GAA and .932 SV%).

There are more goalies with odds at +10000 or higher that hockey fans can bet on, but no names popped out as legitimate contenders. Once the 2023-24 NHL regular season gets underway and the Vezina Trophy odds start to adjust, we’ll update readers with any goalies making a move up the market.

2024 Vezina Trophy Odds Updates

The Vezina Trophy odds won’t change much before the start of the season. We’ll provide updates during the NHL regular season on which goalies are moving up or down the Vezina Trophy contenders list.

Ullmark was priced at +8000 during the offseason last year and ended up winning the award. Will we see another big payout in this NHL futures betting market again like we have the last several years or will one of the favorites emerge victorious? Only time will tell, but we’ll be along for the ride.

(June 27th 2023): Sorokin (+400) is favored to win the 2024 Vezina Trophy, but Saros (+600), Shesterkin (+600), Hellebuyck (+700) and Vasilevskiy (+800) are all right behind him.

(October 23rd 2023): The top four Vezina Trophy favorites haven’t changed, but there’s been small line movement. Ilya Sorokin (+380), Juuse Saros (+650), Igor Shesterkin (+650) and Connor Hellebuyck (+850) lead the Vezina trophy odds market. Andrei Vasilevskiy (+7500) is no longer a top contender, as he will miss at least the next couple months as he recovers from back surgery. Alexander Georgiev (+1300) has seen his odds drop considerably after opening the season with a 1.58 GAA and .943 SV%. Thatcher Demko has also seen his Vezina Trophy odds drop, but he’s not a true contender to win the NHL award. Adin Hill (+5000) and Jordan Binnington (+6000) are both moving into contender status. Hill has opened the NHL season by going 4-0, with a 1.73 GAA and .934 SV%.

(December 19th 2023): Since our last update, the Vezina Trophy odds have shifted quite a bit. Thatcher Demko (+350) is the Vezina Trophy favorite now after opening up at +3000 odds. Demko has a 2.34 GAA and .922 SV%. He’s leading the NHL in wins (16) and he’s fourth in saves (622). Cam Talbot (+400) is second in the Vezina Trophy futures betting market. Talbot has a 2.02 GAA (first among goalies with 20+ games played) and .926 SV% (first among goalies with 20+ games played). Jeremy Swayman (+550), Connor Hellebuyck (+700) and Adin Hill (+1000) round out the top five in Vezina Trophy odds. Hill is 10-2, with a 1.93 GAA and .934 SV%. If Hill started more games, he’d likely be favored to win the Vezina Trophy. Swayman is 9-1, with a 2.06 GAA and .934 SV%, but he’s splitting starts with Linus Ullmark.

Connor Hellebuyck Leading Vezina Trophy Odds

(February 7th 2024): With the NHL All-Star Game in the rearview mirror, we wanted to update the Vezina Trophy odds. Connor Hellebuyck (+100) has taken over as the Vezina Trophy favorite. He leads the NHL in goals against average (2.22) and save percentage (0.923). He’s tied for second in wins (23). Thatcher Demko (+250) has seen his Vezina Trophy odds continue to shorten since our last update. Demko is tied for the lead in wins (27). Jeremy Swayman (+800) is third in the NHL in GAA (2.36) and he’s tied for second in SV% (0.922). These are the top three NHL Vezina Trophy contenders currently. Adin Hill (+1300) and Sergei Bobrovsky (+2000) round out the top five contenders, but they’re unlikely to win.

NHL Vezina Trophy Winners

Here are the last ten Vezina Trophy winners:

  • 2023: Linus Ullmark (Bruins) +8000
  • 2022: Igor Shesterkin (Rangers) +2000
  • 2021: Marc-Andre Fleury (Golden Knights) +4000
  • 2020: Connor Hellebuyck (Jets) +2000
  • 2019: Andrei Vasilevskiy (Lightning) +550
  • 2018: Pekka Rinne (Predators) +1500
  • 2017: Sergei Bobrovsky (Blue Jackets) N/A
  • 2016: Braden Holtby (Capitals) +1300
  • 2015: Carey Price (Canadiens) +650
  • 2014: Tuuka Rask (Bruins) +700

*Odds listed are from the NHL offseason that year (Odds N/A for 2017).

As you can see, the top contenders in the Vezina Trophy odds during the offseason rarely end up winning the NHL award. We’ve had four consecutive Vezina Trophy winners priced at +2000 or higher.

NHL Vezina Trophy Betting Trends

I’ve analyzed previous NHL Vezina Trophy winners to uncover some Vezina Trophy betting trends.

  1. Team Success: Only one goalie has won the Vezina Trophy on a team with a losing record. That was John Vanbiesbrouck in 1986 when the Rangers went 36-38-6 during the regular season.
  1. Playoff Bound: Only one goalie has won the Vezina Trophy on a team that didn’t make it to the playoffs. Bobrovsky won the Vezina Trophy in 2013 and the Blue Jackets missed the playoffs.
  1. Back-to-Back: Only three goalies have won the Vezina Trophy in back-to-back seasons (Roy in 1989/1990, Hasek in 1994/1995 and Brodeur in 2003/2004 and 2007/2008). Hasek is the only ice hockey goalie to win the award in three consecutive seasons (1997/1998/1999).
  1. Track GSAx: Goals saved above expected or GSAx has been the most predictive goalie statistic when analyzing Vezina Trophy winners. Since 2010, the Vezina Trophy winner has finished in the top three in GSAx 11 of 14 times (1st 5 times, 2nd 4 times and 3rd 2 times).

*Vezina Trophy betting trends date back to when GMs started voting (1981-82 NHL season) unless noted.
