Bianca Andreescu Advances as Haddad Maia Retires at Pan Pacific Open

Canada’s Bianca Andreescu advanced to the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Wednesday after second-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil retired due to a back injury. Andreescu was up 3-0 when the match ended, with Haddad Maia in visible discomfort.

This marks Andreescu’s first quarterfinal appearance at the WTA 500 level or above since 2022. The former U.S. Open champion is seeking her fourth career title, with her previous three victories coming in 2019.

Fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez also made it to the quarterfinals after upsetting No. 8 seed Varvara Gracheva of France 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. Meanwhile, No. 6 seed Diana Shnaider of Russia defeated Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-2 and will face Japanese qualifier Sayaka Ishii, who won her match against Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Defending champion Xiyu Wang of China battled through a challenging three-set match to defeat compatriot Sijia Wei 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 and secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Guangzhou Open.
