WTA roundup: Diane Parry reaches Palermo quarterfinals

Fourth-seeded Diane Parry advanced to her fourth tour-level quarterfinal this year with a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-2 victory over Jil Teichmann on Wednesday at the Palermo Ladies Open in Italy.

Parry, of France, converted 7 of 10 break-point opportunities, to 3 of 8 for Switzerland’s Teichmann, the 2019 Palermo champion. Parry also recorded more aces (7-2).

Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu knocked off fifth-seeded Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands 6-2, 7-5. Second-seeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic dropped the first set but responded with a 6-7 (0), 6-2, 6-3 victory over German qualifier Noma Noha Akugue.

Russia’s Erika Andreeva dispatched Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja 6-1, 6-2 in another second-round match. In a battle of Australians, Astra Sharma pounded seven aces in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Ajla Tomljanovic.

Hungarian Grand Prix

The Slovak Republic’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova lost the first set before upsetting fourth-seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round in Budapest.

Ranked 79th in the world, Schmiedlova won 70.3 percent (26 of 37) of her first serve points, to 53.3 percent (24 of 45) for Sorribes Tormo, ranked No. 27.

Russia’s Elina Avanesyan followed a similar path, dropping the first set before defeating Spain’s Rebeka Masarova 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. The Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, over France’s Carole Monnet. Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus defeated Russian Maria Timofeeva 6-3, 6-4.
