Mertens, Potapova Cruise to Wins in WTA Action

Tuesday’s WTA action featured dominant performances from top-seeded players as Elise Mertens and Anastasia Potapova cruised to first-round victories in their respective tournaments.

Mertens Dominates at Singapore Tennis Open

No. 2 seed Elise Mertens needed just 55 minutes to breeze past American Taylor Townsend 6-1, 6-0, in the opening round of the Singapore Tennis Open.

Mertens was flawless under pressure, saving all six break points she faced while converting five of eight break opportunities against Townsend. She advances to face Tatjana Maria, who battled past Yuliia Starodubtseva in a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 comeback win.

Potapova Advances in Linz

At the Upper Austria Ladies Linz tournament, No. 6 seed Anastasia Potapova made quick work of Austrian Julia Grabher, winning 6-2, 6-2 in just 67 minutes.

Meanwhile, No. 5 seed Dayana Yastremska (Ukraine) endured a tougher challenge but prevailed over Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 7-6 (6), 7-5, saving six of eight break points along the way.
