Cristina Bucsa of Spain pulled off a stunning upset over seventh-seeded Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, winning 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 in an epic first-round clash at the Singapore Tennis Open on Monday.
The match, lasting over three hours, saw Bucsa battle back after dropping the first set. She broke Raducanu’s serve three times in the second set and four times in the third. In a match that showcased razor-thin margins, Bucsa won by a single point overall (119-118).
Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, struggled with inconsistency. Despite serving seven aces, she committed seven double faults, which Bucsa capitalized on to secure the hard-fought victory.
